He talked about his mother, a housekeeper at the MGM Grand, saying she has worked “tirelessly without complaint” for 23 years cleaning hotel rooms in Las Vegas.

He gave a shout-out to the Culinary Union — which endorsed Kihuen in his congressional primary and played a significant role in him winning it — for protecting his mother as a worker and one of its members. The Culinary is Nevada’s largest and most politically powerful union.

Solidarity with AFSCME's green machine!

AFSCME

Workers at Donald Trump's Las Vegas hotel recently formed a union and now Trump refuses to negotiate with them. So thousands of AFSCME members rallied in solidarity with their sisters and brothers from the Culinary Workers Union outside of Trump's hotel.

Ligia O. Betancourt
Union member since 1990 (For 24 years!)

I come from Chile. I got married and moved to Puerto Rico. In 1989, we moved to the United States. I lived in Houston, Texas. I started working for a company there and my salary was $4.50 an hour – We couldn’t survive on those wages, with no benefits, and no health insurance.

...

I moved to Las Vegas because my father and my sister were living here already and they both had a Union job at Bally’s. They encouraged me to work in the industry because there were good benefits and wages. I started working at the Sahara Hotel in 1990 as a housekeeper and my salary was $8 an hour. In 1998, I moved to the Bellagio when it opened.

I really needed the health insurance. I had two tumors and two surgeries. I don’t know what would have happened to me if I didn’t have health insurance. God saved my life.

I work for the Union because I really believe that workers need to fight to protect everything that they have. I felt so proud when my leaders gave me the opportunity to help fight for housekeeping language in 2001. This language protected housekeepers on the job; it kept them from being overworked, abused, and pressured to work through lunch to finish room quotas. In 2002, we won the contract and 10,000 housekeepers were able work with dignity and their lives were protected. In 2013, we started to improve the housekeeping language so that housekeepers have safer workloads and we won that - now almost 12,000 housekeepers are protected!

My daughters understand my job and they are proud of me. They tell me: “Mom, you do a lot.” They know you have to fight for workers’ rights and to protect them. I’m going to retire soon and I will enjoy it. My husband and I have Union pensions and we feel happy that we can retire.

The Union is a real protection for workers like me.

North Las Vegas is home base for Culinary Union Local 226. In many ways, the Culinary Union can be looked at as the face of Kihuen’s urban stronghold, where Latino membership makes up a large portion of the union.

Hillary for Nevada

Celia Vargas, Culinary Union member, knows firsthand why we can’t risk a Trump presidency.

“I work at Trump Hotel In Las Vegas in the housekeeping department. ...We fought for a contract for our health insurance, for retirement, because we don’t have retirement. I am a cancer survivor, and our insurance didn’t cover my medicine or my treatment. That’s why we fight. Last December, we voted yes for union representation. But Mr. Trump won’t negotiate with us on our contract. Hillary Clinton is the candidate who will fight for us, for our rights, and for keeping our families together.”

That’s the same message that Victor Juarez is spreading in Nevada. He has been a member of Culinary Union Local 226 since 1989, when he started work as a cook at the Circus, Circus casino. The union represents 55,000 casino and hotel workers, half of them Hispanic and many of them immigrants; it has harnessed Las Vegas’ housekeepers, cooks and janitors and turned them into an electoral powerhouse.

LAS VEGAS -- It's a persistent paradox in American politics: Many Hispanic families have an immense personal stake in what happens on Election Day, but despite population numbers that should mean political power, Hispanics often…

Clinton later spoke to Unite Here, another labor group that includes the Culinary Union, a political powerhouse in Las Vegas. The union, which had decided not to back a candidate during Nevada’s caucus in February, endorsed her Tuesday.

“We will deliver Nevada for Hillary Clinton,” said Geoconda Arguello-Kline, secretary-treasurer of the Culinary Union.

Hillary Clinton steered clear of the plagiarism controversy enveloping Donald Trump’s campaign Tuesday, instead heaping scorn on the Republican presidential candidate’s business record and the first day of his party’s convention.
