He gave a shout-out to the Culinary Union — which endorsed Kihuen in his congressional primary and played a significant role in him winning it — for protecting his mother as a worker and one of its members. The Culinary is Nevada’s largest and most politically powerful union.

North Las Vegas is home base for Culinary Union Local 226. In many ways, the Culinary Union can be looked at as the face of Kihuen’s urban stronghold, where Latino membership makes up a large portion of the union.

That’s the same message that Victor Juarez is spreading in Nevada. He has been a member of Culinary Union Local 226 since 1989, when he started work as a cook at the Circus, Circus casino. The union represents 55,000 casino and hotel workers, half of them Hispanic and many of them immigrants; it has harnessed Las Vegas’ housekeepers, cooks and janitors and turned them into an electoral powerhouse.

Olvera, 41, who said she has worked for four years as a housekeeper at the hotel, said lower wages at the Trump hotel make it difficult for employees to make ends meet.

The company must pay $11,200 to two employees, one of whom was allegedly fired for his union support. The other worker, according to the NLRB complaint that led to the settlement, was denied a transfer to a full-time job.

Clinton later spoke to Unite Here, another labor group that includes the Culinary Union, a political powerhouse in Las Vegas. The union, which had decided not to back a candidate during Nevada’s caucus in February, endorsed her Tuesday.

“We will deliver Nevada for Hillary Clinton,” said Geoconda Arguello-Kline, secretary-treasurer of the Culinary Union.
