So if you're on YouTube, a lot of people are not we're not doing it for the sake of beating though we're doing it for the sake of our local businesses and hit. Hard than Covid- 19 Quarry Daybreak Home order. Basically the order is Super sad for us to go ahead and flatten the curve and prevent the spread of Covenant. So it's it's something that's needed yet at the same time, our non essential business closed down and now even our businesses that provide essential items and and needs aren't and so we to go ahead and reach out to the ability to our local restaurants and cafes that open that haven't yet closed down to go and visit. So the city our campaign manager, but also one of the most loyal patrons and customers of Peta and Cindy you thank you some course. Thanks. yeah. Well we have Steve as well. I have been going to Pasadena. I don't know I remember being as Grand opening so how long ago eight years ago about seven and a half? Yeah, Yeah. And then since then you've expanded in San Diego and you guys have is it soon. Shops down there now as we have a $5 in San Diego, one in Carlsbad Pasadena. Oh cool. I love it. That's awesome and you're from the Roastery Pasadena. Yes. Yeah. we roast all the coffees here in Pasadena and not too faith. we did public company, especially say it's money because I'm talking about all things and and sort of living to realities of what life before was my company looks different the just a feel of let's defense. everything is different since just even two weeks ago. Yeah. so yeah cool. Well. we'd love to hear about you as a business owner. It's an insect you have for us and how to see a Cup of coffee like this. Yeah coffee is a weird journey. My first level is back in College. I walked into a coffee and I was in my typical thing, got my coffee, sugar and cream, and you know, knock it down and I'll be back in coffee was the puffy candy. That's what I thought he was supposed to taste like. So that's what I was looking for and that's what I want to make as I was in the process of doing that gentleman who was making coffee and he was using a very similar style to what I'm doing this morning here but he was pleased instead of just adding all the right away. Could you take a coffee before? the show? Real quick to turn up your, I think some viewers are having trouble. Oh okay. Yeah it fits up all the way. Alright is that better let's see I think so yeah turn up all the way. I think that should make sure you catch everyone. Thank you. please continue. Yeah so he started the coffee I tried to and all of the sudden being blueberry tasting things that I expected out of a Cup of coffee just got Super excited about it started chasing coffee. I ended up going to a coffee all up and down but most of the area there's. Try it at some other all my faith in coffee shops coffee, My senior thesis I caught up and when I went to grab my dissertation and a coffee, she became my. This was my community and so about eight. it's little radios and our family had sold our business and you need to restart and I was trying to figure out what my life and I had two passions of my faith and my family and it's baseball and come and it was too late for others. so coffee is like a. kind of romantic occasion and allows to all these coffee shops that was a coffee shop around for years and and so chance to see Up some. David Are you hearing Steve? I'm not yes you guys. Hear me. Okay. Yeah you're going in was your commute. should I try but I think I might be Internet connection but we'll we'll keep trying. Yeah. we'll we'll continue though okay, where you where you left off Steve. So when did you open your first location? So seven and a half years ago, we opened in a Cup of the impasse after having the code of coffee there and for the name So in Costa Rica, the word is used everyday. It's like Aloha and it mean different people and say, and Coco Vita. And during the past seven years, I know that the communities jerking is about increased huggins connection between each other. That's why you have the inception, cafe and coffee how was your community involvement been as well. It's been great Army made up of and having spent the size that we have a purpose being designing it that way it's because I actually want place where coffee was sort of the basis for community building, not just a product or service I sell but to be something that the community and the. You know it was the last in Costa Rico is learning how to start and I realized I was a horrible barisan compared to some of the people that work a couple of years suck at the art I suck at you know I was really struggling with it and so I just kinda figure out what it is about coffee that I love so much and that it wasn't just making lattes. That was me to it. I enjoy it. I thought it wasn't what I was being it for me and it didn't really like community and like the space of coffee shops can place for people to connect I can't really talk to a stranger in a bar because that has different rotations, but and a coffee shop now reaching across the table, somebody else and opening a conversation really easy and it's a safe environment and really like that and popular reversal things that everybody's always drinking so became and see thing for me to connect with. But in the designing, how do we get started? it's not would necessary, medical purple mind or any type of just say. hey, how do we connect people that we might not normally connect with and so that was in the design. forget the way we did the. Many teething the way we did the counters even the products we have something for everybody and it made it easier for me to connect the community that we also do giving and that is an important part. You can't just pop out community. You gotta be participate in it. so we support the nurses week at Children's Hospital. We do free coffee there for all the nurses and doctors we do every year a gift and proceeds from the coffee community organism that even or connected with we've been part of clean up programs. We've been part of all the different. You know for me, I had my customers to cut coffee shop because we have great service you like being there because we do these things these things because we love doing in our sauer and it's not be buying a foundation. Yes, No. that's that's great. Thank you I I mean when regards to different coffee shoulders off the first part of their origin. Why is their coffee owners their artists? There's the of it, but what's interesting all conversations. I've had have actually brought up as so being that cold Formosa. So thank you for for birthing in that because community aspect that is something that we all kinda need to be aware of engaging in it will go ahead and foster that that's really great. Steve. I'm here eating this very avocado toast that looks amazing. Sorry guys. I have to be ready and and then eating this Sheila. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. How do how do these? I'm gonna have a heart attack? I mean I mean in a way because I I'm enjoying the food. How did these dishes for me in addition to the car? so ah the space forty-five start the copy business with during the enough money to happen that is a friend of one of our partners ah was also and he was speaking at that time and in between projects and in the upcoming and working for this ah and helping our That chill is that you're looking at came out of meal so one of the things we do is we cook staff and the kids to come up with the Bay. enjoy it might be a family recipe. They'll take the ingredients from the shop. It makes something that people cuz I mean I broke with them is be wrong, but if you like its own right so we always are looking for variety and and so the staff in the back of the House, we happen to taste just like two delicious. We got. That's how we get up to the top. so I'm dying right now. This is so good. I love your just and you guys really came out version too. Because I mean you're talking about vegan, I love me fakes. I love burgers and hot dogs, so it was something that I wasn't really like were resonating with came from my team. lots are vegan staff and they started beating the kitchen that was to them and their diet and I taste them there and I was they convinced me and so I actually one of my vegan burrito the so the conversion of a Turkey so delicious. it's it's my favorites. Yeah. we're eating Cindy. I love that you guys are so I yeah, what are you eating? I same thing from covert Monday to Friday, like normal week. Obviously this week, you know it's been three times a week, so I get a breakfast burrito. I give us a salad plate this virus, you'll just have to put yourself and I get the White tea you guys have on top and microphone, but those three nice every day. so you guys have any three years. It's really good The croque Madame. That's that's all good. It's my favorite. Yo what are some other drink favorite and the competition. I'm sorry. What are some drink specials favorite favorites that you would recommend who have never been. right? Yeah for me every day drinking. it's a perfect milk to coffee. It will be the tip and still get a nice mild finish and being able to see it. So that's how I get that once a day nobody shot, which is but we all also have some really good. Machine explore the weather is hot or Cobra is suddenly really proud of. It's a lot of cold room where they talking and make a group that actually roast coffee and coffee for the purposes of cold brew. It was a bottle it We brothers and we also think I'm camping at very soon. It's the things that drink every day All day. I never get sick and then once in a while we always have a seasonal special so right and they had we're a big not happening for all. That's an unfortunate thing for us, but we sell our Valentine's drinks to Strawberry Mocha. There's a lot of variety of different art kind of goal with this is not just this trendy, but to take that are highlighted bad season and bring that into and we tees I go through the week I try favorite and huntings but also like our discus cooler. That's something I can do everyday and I never yeah I can totally put 19 why she. Every day, this is amazing when you have a great program and coffee program, and so you guys have like an accident chef that comes in the new. So initially, we have an executive chef as a tiger and we went over because the hearts that opens a multiple of that one person coming so how consulting exactly human. we also vegan suggest we happy innovation Department by headed by Frank does not only are beverages they held up the menu there as well and other people recently. That was we just have a very specific approach. Do the food that they like to make by multiple people weigh in and also the last suspect activity and have a different perspective? What well That Let's Steve gonna head out of it. I think he caught it again. see. Yeah. Okay. Cool. Oh, no you just cut for a little bit. yeah great. Thanks so much for sharing now that I mean the Cove in 19, we have a murder when did you first hear about it? And then what were you as soon as you heard about not being able to allow people to die or and and what measures did you have to take you could push through that it might have it probably was horrifying so yeah. It was really start to get really serious in this I was actually in endurance overseas at a coffee looking for new farmers with and so we were doing we did it over a dozen out there looking for different kinds of coffees to bring back cuz I was out there came back and. the moon. Then big things in New York, and that's when I start to get an idea. Oh my gosh. This is gonna hit us and I know what that means and for me and like those are there's nothing you can do watch it. You can think about it you stress around it but without clear about the next thing to be really hard to prepare for it and so we were already looking at some scenarios and then it happened being the first time I heard that you know people to make chapter in San Francisco first got this. Shoulder bag It was clear to me that was gonna last more than I knew shop so corner of businesses that are gonna happen if I can't afford to two weeks of income because they come small business to pay yesterday's but today's sales and Kind of weird. I can't see if you're still there the last and the most probably, but that's where our preparation went into the clubs in a position that when this over we still have a business come back to still have a way to higher, you know team like employees can reduce it because there's just have them continue working while you're also losing money sign some adjustments had those decisions were political for you make how did you guys? You where you requires where or shuffle them around or look them around during two different locations. How did that? It's not a business didn't work from home. There's three people for people that can do that on my team and everybody and be present at the shop. So if the coffee shop is closed, the business for them to do there's a loan income. so it's pretty odd how it's going to have to make decisions. unfortunately for us that when safer at home to shape, didn't only cause us to not have to say to people that can stay home. our customers have to sit at home. so they're even if we broke up scale, most people, especially in San Diego, a lot of around office buildings and places to work not homes so when everything shut down. Anybody can be able to shop so it became pretty clear early that I need to start furloughing people so we're going to do 50 percent. of your weight for the next two weeks but stayed home, but you know that that was it. that was the expense of our budget. that's where we are female and I know I did when they were gonna lift, which made it a proper. Yeah. regards to ah our allocation still open gym I mean some of them still about then Cindy during the break the connection oh yes. that's dude. Yeah. The East Village locations are still open. They still have you know about can be around them that being there makes sense the allocations the campus that it's on or that saw in down so there wasn't open there that oh my God okay. and that's totally understandable. get nobody's literally go out and and they're a lot of people that can in regards to then but are some ways so you go. Are available to order on phone orders are obviously encouraged because of your money and finest the processing, but some other ways are all locations currently accept on orders. No those three are accepting phone orders on Grub hub postbox, depending on the locations, they're slightly different served by door dash and we're also doing laughing so you can into our website. It'll link you to a website where you can order copies by the bag and we'll see you brewing equipment we'll just as well. We are also doing curbside so you don't wanna come into the coffee shop you can get on to our portal and be get close up to the side and we'll walk out and take it to your car for you. So we're doing everything we can very far for our design. We like I said the whole point of our coffee you to come in and put a community. How do you have when you're taking things to go showing me their and while I know autos so you know to not have quotes is kinda sad for you that you played it. That's. Amen. Yeah, no. well what we've been what we've been urged to do one of my BFFs that told me just get into the habit of always playing your food as well, Just safety precautions and I noticed also when visiting you you were urging the customers to practice social distancing on evenly and I thought that was that was real business system are doing they should be, but you an example of that and what I loved before before and you know what how you how that capital that was even though people saying there was a. Like just what like even though there was a social distance employees that were there who were still so loving with them connecting with so I I'm I'm kind of made just touch that you're your staff is still able to community dancing. So that's great. Yeah for us. we internal College and arguments about whether we should whether it's social and for me personally, I don't think the words of distance is the right word. It should be physical distancing that social you can ship with the people around Bill Cannot community. I think that's a vital at this time. If we don't have connection we. To look for when we start to look for faults and when you start doing that that's not solution before you're looking for a way to you know, push this offense and I think that's when it becomes protect screws kind of press to keep connected socially it being creating a danger both to our customers as well as team members and that's not a conversation. We've been some management team of we've gotten input from this working me to to to to my board to talk how that can be made making changes. The time that liquid tape so yesterday, it was something started with them. We were notice certain way were now police beat think you have to hide, but that doesn't mean we cross our minds several times even wonder whether we shouldn't even speak. I know that's a conversation before, but many times I offer shops. The feedback I get from the customers is we need this. We still do to people in some. it's not just about the food and snacks drinks. It's not about the caffeine. It's also feeling human is still feel. My some normal see is gonna come a point right and though we have our business back there the ones that feel safe continue to serve and work, and it's sort of selected by they get to say hi to people and that's important to them. They commit to the customer have one who is in Mobile age group and she uses to stop she comes in and she makes it a point to be safe, obviously to maintain our six feet, which comes in there cuz she's saying I want us because this is my compass and what happens. Coffee shop She was a regular everyday. You know a car covid-, 19, trying to be through Covid- 19, and she's get the words so party goal. here is people safe, but at the same time, still maintain community and connection that we're we're not quite right. I really a Princeton. I'm still learning how to post Instagram. That's old I am but I I take a picture. Yeah I end up and I said it doesn't feel like coconut without Vita life and I really When it's empty, it doesn't feel and so that community in our shops and I can't wait for that to some point it's since did you mention that Steve the other day he we mean making coffee was that you I don't know I don't think so yeah. so I mean regulating or was that a one -time thing we're gonna start doing a home brewing not class. Just you know videos how your coffee at home? what the tip is using what equipment to use we're gonna start adding those As well, so people can connect that way. I don't know how long this thing is gonna last. whether it's gonna you know I have scenarios right. there's a miracle and how Middle of the month we're all inspired and you know there's about everybody is able to go back to your life and that's highly doubt able and then there's the we're moving straight into no one can step out of the office and everybody's still stuck at home and that's another reality plan for as well and then or the third, which is most likely going to happen is continuation of the safer at home policy. That's. Effect right now. So if that's the case we wanna make sure we help our community still telling our story Instagram book and other social media content is important. What about about putting the book madams and coffee cups all day long right? I have to have something that hey, this is how we wanna do so what we know is incomplete putting up we're gonna be putting videos of how these Vsixty versus a bench press and kind of I guess that's awesome. So how do you grew up or how did you make your coach? yeah, I adding attention. I have one of these. I can do and talk the same time so I've ruined this Cup in terms, but it's okay, lot delicious for me. I used to 60 it's from Hario and it's chronicle shape, but it's the referral and the Creek that's a V. I'm making coffee, but it changed. Yes, we do. yeah, we have a kit for the Vsixty. It comes with a plastic version of this so expensive than the glass burn It comes with a culture kit and everything you need just like you if you don't want it for you to coffee picking them and we're workout figure out how to get people coffee at the request. I've got a couple of request from that over the weekend, so we're trying to look into that as well, but a grinder is important and if you're buying, please burks one of the cheap burgers bad blade grinder any of this. yeah, No, that's awesome. You're a little bit more of your guys is coffee. Like a coffee monthly like a membership, we have in the Pasadena location. Yes, so we as a subscription very soon it was something our launch radar and this thing happened, then kinda set things back a little bit but we have coffees that we make so approach. the coffee has always been. we're not looking for the best coffee in the world. that's not sort of to me. It doesn't make sense so depend upon how somebody always coffee. what a good Cup of good roasted. It looks like trying to approach people all different levels of coffee. We have coffee enjoy coffee experience. coffee, go coffees or coffees are very copy. that goes really well walk and then they enjoy coffees that are more fruit forward that books experience. I was telling you about. That's an important I've been having enjoy coffee this morning from it. That's what we're looking for for joy coffees and for attorney coffees. we're looking for coffees that are 90 point of coffees that are just award-winning. Mind-blowing coffee is minded and Commercial but I've endured we find one bag that I completely love not just the taste of the queen, but the story behind it. It was a gun from Riverside who went under us to work with the farm. They came up with this beautiful small crop, but they lost freeze on the floor. There's one left and it sort of in the auction basically waiting at the last minute and so that talk is coming in a little coffee and we'll be launching that as an experienced coffee very soon to the best sellers are are great, our our espresso blend and our steadfast blend a little bit darker roasty. Yeah. And then what's the what's your website? if you could just again so our main site is WWW Copacabana dot com also and also go online to buy coffee from Coco Vita Cotton Coffee Coffee dot coffee. Yeah. I got it. Yeah. No. thanks so much. I mean we'll do all that we can to go ahead and share this video and and and is there any other ways that will be involved with any alerts for us just to get involved with. Obviously you're a man of community. so yeah, you know. The rare times that people should be going out or even if you're not you know out in about, but you have to go to the grocery market or you have to do what is errands you don't have to run to continue. I went out there. You know somebody a smile like that. one of the things I see at the shop that makes it so important for me. you know you notice that this morning as well, let's see and we have to say from the six feet distance. I'm a firm believer. That's an important part to do but you can live something to smile and in that empathetic base and that just makes them much more survivable. I don't wanna come up the other everybody with their walls up and people being afraid to to to approach anybody else. Your horse stories from Fred Martin, who had spirit and things that you know the grocery market were being shot. That is that there has been going to be something I think that's like a worst thing we can do ourselves if we don't need to to shut off from the world and feel safe. There's ways to do both. I don't do those two things as color option really wanna encourage people to do that whether it's a local business to support during this time, buying something you know there's a delivery person who's dropped something off at. I'm not gonna give him a hug. That's not right, but there's a way for us to say hi to you and and. Smile and we're livable. Yeah. Yeah. No. I we totally agree Thanks so much for continuing to building a building days and community so important are kind of after after staying at being able to connect and she is really key. I feel like being with ourselves, connect others is primarily one of the great reasons that we're here to connect with each other. Yeah and I love that you guys are finding ways to do this like this month. I I've never heard of it like you know, I'm gonna do the my church friend. We gotta we worry about how to do. Together as you know, I'm meeting online, so that's a community. Easter is coming up and we're just talking about that. We're you know being in front of them. We gotta fight it, but still, you know, stay connected for sure exactly there's Andy and I and and Hannah we had a meeting through this before that we had a dinner meeting where different dinners and we were just eating. Yeah. I think you can also another family and have like together Netflixs, but yeah, thank you so much for coming on and then what's their social media handles as well. Steve Sign up at. I'm crazy. I'm the wrong person to ask Okay. Well I I remember you're in your Instagram is at Copa underscore Vita right. that's it. I just had to look at my back to do that, but it's gonna laugh at me. It's all good. We'll see you next time. Thank you. Bye guys. Bye.
