Chicago magazine writes about the “Improbable Encore” of Alex Klein, who joins the DePaul University School of Music this fall. Klein, Principal Oboe with the C...hicago Symphony Orchestra, notes, “As a professional musician honored to play in one the world's finest orchestras, I undoubtedly become attached to the constant search for excellence and improvement, a humbling and necessary need for performing artists. DePaul University has shown its capacity to teach and invest in the same direction, creating one of the most amazing music school campuses and enlisting top-level artist teachers. It is a privilege to join them, and I so look forward to leading a productive and supportive oboe studio at DePaul.” Read about his “Improbable Encore” at http://www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Magazi…/…/Oboe-Alex-Klein/.

Senior Amy Parker was one of about 60 DePaul students who participated in a service immersion trip during spring break. Parker volunteered at a men's shelter in Washington. “It was great to understand my voice could do something about (homelessness),” she tells the Chicago Tribune. These trips give students a chance to "experience a reality that's different from their own," says trip coordinator Emily LaHood-Olsen. http://ow.ly/kr6Q30anv0R
“Pixar, Disney, Google, EA, Ubisoft—any big game design firm that you can think of is likely recruiting at a top game design school,” says David Soto of The Princeton Review, which has revealed its list of Top 20 Colleges and Graduate Schools for Studying Game Design. The School of Design in the DePaul University College of Computing and Digital Media (CDM) made both lists: No. 18 for its undergraduate program and No. 10 for its graduate program. http://ow.ly/SWTH30al6y2

Ebola. Zika. When a pandemic breaks out, emergency medical groups charge in—but drug manufacturers may not be right behind them.
“Intellectual property negotiations take a long time, and the response to pandemics has to be exceptionally quick,” says Ana Santos Rutschman, DePaul’s inaugural Jaharis Faculty Fellow in Health Law and Intellectual Property. “We really need to figure out how to make intellectual property negotiations happen faster and more effectively in emergency... scenarios.”
As a consultant for the World Health Organization, Santos Rutschman helped health and legal professionals as they struggled to find common ground. She and her students study and research the evolving Zika epidemic and its impact on health and intellectual property law.
“It offers a unique opportunity to teach and research at the intersection of these two increasingly interconnected areas,” she says.

DePaul’s Center for Journalism Integrity and Excellence will honor Lester Holt of NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt and data journalist Ben Welsh (CMN ’04) of the Los Angeles Times for work that embodies the highest principles of journalism, including truth, accuracy, fairness and context.
“Lester Holt and Ben Welsh are great role models,” said Don Moseley, co-director of the center. “Just like our students at the Center for Journalism Integrity and Excellence, they’ve taken the Brown Line, they know the city inside and out, and strive to achieve the highest forms of journalism and ethics."
