On April 24, I was invited to Lake Forest College north of Chicago to present lessons from my book. The details for the event were handled by Jeff Sundberg who teaches environmental business courses. The invitation was extended by GD Scholar Rich Pettingill who also had his Dead cover band on hand. It was great fun with a good turnout of students, and it was made even better for me since my nephew, Jon Paris, made the trip from Evanston where he's wrapping up his Executive MBA at Northwestern. Here's a short video of the Dire Wolves as they did their sound check before I gave my talk.

Viva La Muerte’ – All the Birds

I really like this new album. It makes me want to see this band live! I’ve listened to it several times now…more than any other new album by a new band I can recall. It has a real get-up-and-dance feel every time I put it on. These guys know how to kick it! I particularly like the variety of instruments: electric guitar, acoustic guitar, pedal steel, keyboards (with an occasional Hammond B3 sound), fiddle, banjo, mandolin, bass, harmonica,...

Another wonderful thing about DS Jubilee was all the friends from the Grateful Dead Scholars Caucus who were there. This was the first time I'd been at a show with any of them...David Gans (who performed), Rebecca Adams, Heather Laurel, Shaugn O'Donnel and Graham Boone. Here's a picture of David, another one of Rebecca, and another of Shaugn, Graham, me and Heather.

Dark Star Jubilee was a great event over the Labor Day weekend. It was the first time I'd seen DSO since Jeff Matson joined on lead guitar. I was very pleased with the results, and the entire weekend lineup was aimed at satisfying Deadheads. Here's a picture of DSO at the merch tent.

If you read Spanish (even if you don't) this was published last Friday:

I'm working to clean up an English translation which I'll post when finished.

“El mundo de los negocios puede aprender de la cultura popular a averiguar qué quieren sus clientes y cuál es la mejor manera de llegar a ellos”. Esta es la principal tesis que el profesor de la Escuela de Negocios H. Wayne Huzinga Barry Barnes defiende en su último trabajo, y que explica a El Confi...

I'm in Montreal today. Just did an interview for "The Will", a program on the Discovery Channel. I don't know when it will be broadcast, but it was fun to get a trip to Montreal and to do the interview. Here's a picture of the crew who handled it: Mike (PA), Olivier (camera), Murray (director), and Leon (sound).

Just when I start to think nothing is really happening with my book, something exciting comes along. Since my last update on May 1, I submitted a 1400 word article I was asked to write for publication in Leadership Excellence, a journal that reaches 140,000 readers. I’ll let you know when it’s published.

More exciting than that, I received advance copies of the Japanese edition of my book 3 weeks ago. It looks quite different than the US edition, not only the cover itself..., but there’s some additional content including some black & white photos, tables, and footnotes. You can see the cover here on my FB page.

I’m in the process of responding to several questions posed by Hector Garcia Barnes (no relation), a writer for El Confidencial, a newspaper in Spain. They plan to publish a short interview in their Lifestyles section.

I’ve been invited to speak at the International Association of Venue Managers annual conference in Ft Lauderdale in late July. I’ll be talking about the many ways the Dead were innovative and effective when they worked with so many music venues over their long career.

Last week, I was contacted by a program on the Discovery Channel, “The Will.” They’re planning to fly me to Montreal in late June to be interviewed for their program on Garcia’s contentious will.

My book has been translated into Japanese...here's the cover. They did a really nice job throughout the book and have included photos and footnotes not found in the US version.

Grateful Dead Archive Inaugural Event - April 21, 2012

Last Saturday night was the inaugural event for the Grateful Dead Archive in Santa Cruz. It was a wonderful gathering of folks who got the first look at the opening A Box of Rain display, and it had some remarkable pieces of history to share. Nicholas Meriwether has done a remarkable job dealing with so much amazing material in a short period of time. Here are some pictures I took...enjoy!
