You ask of my companions. Hills, sir, and the sundown, and a dog large as myself, that my father bought me. They are better than beings because they know, but do not tell; and the noise in the pool at noon excels my piano.

Have you ever wondered what Walla Walla was like in 1975? Ever been curious about how people decided to plant grapes in this arid, hot environment? Rick Small was there when all of that happened, and we’re so excited to welcome him to the store for an evening of conversation about Walla Walla and his journey working in this brave new wine region. We welcome winemaker Rick Small as the second guest in our new Celebrity Series Tasting Series. Rick’s winery, Woodward Canyon Wine...ry, was the second bonded winery in Walla Walla. Rick made his first vintage of wine for his own consumption in 1979, and went on to make his first commercial vintage in 1981. Woodward Canyon is now one of the most renowned and sought-after producers in Walla Walla, especially famous for their Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon.

We’ll taste a few current releases of Rick’s wines and a few older examples of his wines. Please bring your questions and your curiosity. $25.00, limited seating available/reservation required. Call 503-246-6101 to make reservations.

Just one of 14 sherries we're pouring tomorrow night at Sherry Wars. Fernando de Castilla is a producer we love and have followed the work of for a long time. We're excited to show the Antique Fino tomorrow night! 5:30-7, $15 to taste almost $1300 worth of the world's most exciting sherries!

"The NV Antique Fino is eight years of average age when bottled; it's fragrant and perfumed, feminine and subtle, with dry flowers and a rare balance between old and young. The palate shows a much more serious wine, pungent, intense, saline, sharp and at the same time delicate, complex and long, most probably because it's fortified to 17% at the time of bottling, something that was common in the past, but that almost nobody does anymore. A most unusual old-style Fino. Bravo! 4,000 bottles produced yearly. Drink 2013-2018." Luis Gutierrez

Wear your red shirt for Dan Petroski tonight!

New and Lovely

Dan Petroski’s label Masiccan takes its name from a story about Bacchus mischievously transforming Monte Massico in Campania into the best vineyards in Italy. Dan makes storied, crisp, and deep white wine in California from Friulian varieties like ribolla gialla and tocai friulano. He gives new life to more familiar varieties like chardonnay and sauvignon blanc. He was also named winemaker of the year in 2017 by the SF Chronicle. Dan will be pouring in the shop tomorrow night from 5:30-7:00. In honor of his visit we’ll include some wines from our favorite Friulian producers: I Clivi, Skerk, Raccaro, Meroi, and Niccolini. A total of 12 wines for $15 per taster. Don’t miss this one!

We welcome two of the coolest winegrowers/makers anywhere to our halls, Frank Cornelissen and Sebastian Riffault. Our partners at Walden Selections are bringing these two into the shop as part of their journey to Brumaire. Riffault and Cornelissen bring different perspectives to low-intervention winemaking and both stand out in a good way from other winemakers in their respective regions (Sicily for Frank, Sancerre for Sebastian). Frank works on Mount Etna in Sicily and goes... to zealous lengths to make a wine as free of a human touch as possible: wine, like wine would make itself. Sebastian is in Sancerre, a second-generation winemaker who started his own label in 2002 and whose commitment to biodiversity and biodynamics comes across in his stony, citrusy, and intense wines.

Meet the winemakers, and taste:

"Our farming philosophy is based on our acceptance of the fact that man will never be able to understand nature’s full complexity and interactions. We therefore choose to concentrate on observing and learning the movements of Mother Earth in her various energetic and cosmic passages and prefer to follow her indications as to what to do, instead of deciding ourselves. Consequently this has taken us to avoiding all possible interventions on the land we cultivate, including any treatments, whether chemical, organic, or biodynamic, as these are all a mere reflection of the inability of man to accept nature as she is and will be."
