Further to our post from yesterday, EHB Chair Erin McDonald was asked to comment on the historic significance of the Edmonton Iron Works Building.

The iron and steel that the 107-year-old Iron Works building provided once drove the economy, helping Edmonton grow.

A few updates from Edmonton's Historian Laureate. Thanks for being out in the community, Chris!

'Folks from Next Up building dioramas at a workshop on Creative Activism last Monday.'
'Listening in to some of the panelists from the talk on the Conditions and History of Sexual Exploitation at the @[400776083274483:274:SEWG - Sexual Exploitation Working Group]'s conference last week.'
'Showing off a copy of my old student paper at Parkallen School's Career Week.'
'And some of the lovely folks I rode along with on the Snow Goose Chase.'

So last week I had a pretty brutal cold that knocked me out for a couple days. But I somehow managed to rally enough to make it to lots of great stuff happening... around the city:

Next Up (a great leadership program I went through) invited Kathryn Lennon and I to give a workshop on Creative Activism last Monday. It was really inspiring to see all the participants roll their sleeves up and make dioramas showing models of Indigenous art, community groups picnicking in green spaces they wanted to preserve, and other models of what they want their city to look like.

Then on Thursday I got to moderate a fascinating conversation on the Conditions and History of Sexual Exploitation. It was part of the Sexual Exploitation Working Group's Collaborative Efforts for Change conference. Really interesting to hear how settlement and immigration are connected to these issues.

On Friday, I was invited to talk to the elementary kids at Parkallen School for Career Week. They had such good questions - about the most exciting parts of being a journalist, about the most boring parts, about what classes you should take to get a career in media. Definitely take English. And maybe get a trust fund?

And then on Saturday I was up bright and early to go birding with some lovely Edmontonians on the Snow Goose Chase. We bussed all around the Tofield area to spot avocets, yellow-rumped warblers, kestrels, and yes snow geese. Look for clips from that on a future podcast!
