Every Monday: We The People for Sensible Gun Laws
11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., North Side of the White House.
Join a group of citizens calling on the U.S. Congress, State and Local Officials to:
- Recognize guns are a public health issue
- Require universal background checks
- Recognize domestic violence directly relates to weak gun laws
- Require gun safety training
- Reinstate the Assault Weapons Ban
- Ban high capacity ammunition magazines
- Provide research funds into causes and solutions to gun violence

November 5: Webinar: Violence, Trauma, and Reentering Women with HIV: Issues to Consider, National Clearinghouse for the Defense of Battered Women

Informative presentation on Pay Equity. The speaker is Michelle “Mike” Leber, who serves as the chair of the National Committee on Pay Equity, a coalition of women's and civil rights organizations. November 8: Living for 32 (A Sundance Film Festival Selection)

A free screening of this powerful film on the need for sensible measures to prevent gun violence. Living 32 is the inspirational story of Colin Goddard, a survivor of the tragic Virginia Tech massacre who, after recovering and finishing his degree, volunteered for the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, going undercover with a hidden camera into gun shows to prove how easy it is to buy a gun, with no identification, no background check, and just a wad of cash. Following the 40-minute film, Colin Goddard and Lori Haas, the mother of Emily Haas who helped Goddard call the police even though he had been shot 4 times, will lead a discussion about initiatives at the local, state, and national levels to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people. November 13: Webinar: Supporting the Supporters: Informal Networks Have a Role in Preventing and Ending Domestic Violence, Battered Women’s Justice Project

The webinar will explore the value of informal networks in victims’ and perpetrators lives. This includes how we can support those networks to respond to the needs of the victim and perpetrator, the reluctance of friends and families to intervene in what is commonly understood as a private matter, and building programs and supports geared towards friends, families, and the general public. Traditionally, informal networks are formally included only in the assessment phase of domestic violence services. The webinar will address moving toward a model that would include and leverage informal networks in preventing domestic violence. November 18: Webinar: Prevalence and Characteristics Among Domestic Violence and Sexual Offenders: 2009 Partner Rape Study,
Battered Women’s Justice Project

The study explored the prevalence of intimate partner rape in adult sex offenders and domestic violence offenders in treatment in Colorado. Although domestic violence offenders and sex offenders are not the same, the mechanisms that lead to these problematic behaviors differ, this webinar will present findings that these individuals exhibit similar behaviors and attitudes, particularly with respect to intimate sexual violence. Ongoing Action: Global Amphibian BioBlitz: Saving Amphibians Through Social Networking,
Amphibians around the world are disappearing, and nearly a third are threatened with extinction. To better understand and conserve these animals, scientists need more information on their locations. The Center has joined with other conservation organizations to launch a Web-based social networking effort, “the Global Amphibian BioBlitz,” which allows amateur naturalists to submit their amphibian photographs, along with dates and locations, in order to take a census of the world’s amphibians and discover which species are still here, and where.
