Demographic data provide potent markers of the social crisis in Detroit. The pictures just show how easy it is to see.

When I see references to the inevitability of gender progress, I think of the difference between depictions of Hercules and Megara body types in ~400 versus ~2000. (Here's all the dimorphism posts: https://familyinequality.wordpress.com/tag/dimorphism/)

In Shanghai to give a talk at Fudan University, and some R&R, and saw this government poster, celebrating Shanghai's "success in establishing" a "National Sanitary District" and "Shanghai City Civilized District", and the slogan is: "Every household striving to be a civilized family; every person participating in the activity of establishing (that civilized family)." Two interesting things: 1. The "civilized family" includes grandparents (which is essential, because old-age support is inadequate), and 2. They have two kids. (The birth rate in Shanghai, one of the lowest in the world, is less than one per woman, and shows little prospect of rising even with the end of the one-child policy.)
