I always remember the day Fan took this picture. It was blowing an absolute gale, raining torrentially, and while I'm sat in a nice warm car, Fan is literally hanging onto a post trying to get the perfect storm picture while being blown every which way. He looked like a drowned rat by the time he came back.
What was produced though, was quite simply one of my favourite pictures of all time.
He worked on it a little, but thought it was such poor quality, too grainy and not sha...rp, that it wasn't worth looking at for too long.
We'd talked about entering the Landscape of the Year competition previously, and I said this one should definitely be entered. He grumbled and said nobody would like it, as it was too 'imperfect'. He chose two other pictures, and I insisted on this one. How can you not like the drama that was clearly unfolding. The grainy look of the sky only served to enhance that drama.
He was stunned, and completely thrilled yet gutted at the same time lol, that he got a Highly Commended. The picture, in full glorious grainy black and white was displayed in the National Gallery for all to see.
Proud, proud moment.
We're now blessed to see it in this 10 year edition, among other beautifully creative images, for all time. It just goes to show that you don't have to have the sharpest image, the perfect set up, only mother nature and a keen eye, and you can capture some amazing memories.
Such a wonderful memory for me.
It's been a very busy few months since Fan's passing, but we are working our way through the many thousands of images he left as his legacy. We hope to put some of them together to create either a book or a calendar, with proceeds being used to ensure the children can make their way to China to see their family once again.
We've had many enquiries from people asking if we'll be producing something, and we'd like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your eagerness to support this project. It's taking time I know lol, but genuinely, there are thousands of images! 😳
If you'd like to register your interest in either a calendar or book, drop us a line by private messages, and we'll send you notice when they're ready to roll out. 👍👍👍
Thanks again everyone.
