Influenza (also known as the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The flu is different from a cold. The flu usually comes on suddenly.

Here are some preventative tips from Birkam Health Center to avoid the spread of flu:
• Get a flu vaccine.

• Try to avoid contact with sick people.

• While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.

• If you are sick with flu like illness, stay home! CDC recommends that you stay home for 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities.

• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue away in the trash after you use it.

• Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol based hand sanitizer.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs are spread that way.

• Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu.

The Birkam Health and Personal Counseling Center is bringing the Silence Shoot to campus. The program was started in Mount Pleasant by Matthew Pruitt, who has struggled with depression and loneliness leading to two suicide attempts along with having siblings that were bullied. The Silence Shoot consists of participants having their photograph taken with red tape over their mouth. This is a way to show your stance against bullying and spread awareness about suicide. The photo shoot is scheduled to run from 11:00am - 2:00pm on September 13 in the CLACS Office on the first floor of the University Center.

For more information about the Silence Shoot, please go to the website:
