So very sad to hear about the passing of this literary great. I cut my teeth on her Catwings series, read Earthsea in middle school, and loved her nonfiction in college. We can only be grateful she left us so many beautiful things to read (and reread, and reread) in her wake.

The prolific and profoundly influential writer, who brought a deft literary and feminist touch to works of primarily science fiction and fantasy, died at her home in Portland, Ore., on Monday.

Congratulations Jacqueline Woodson!

Did you know the US has a National Ambassador for Young People's Literature? They serve a two-year term (current is graphic novelist Gene Luen Yang), and the position was created in order to "raise national awareness of the importance of young people’s literature as it relates to lifelong literacy, education and the development and betterment of the lives of young people."

Jacqueline Woodson Named National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature

Author Jacqueline Woodson, who has won a National Book Award and four Newbery Honors, has been named the sixth National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature.
