So very sad to hear about the passing of this literary great. I cut my teeth on her Catwings series, read Earthsea in middle school, and loved her nonfiction in college. We can only be grateful she left us so many beautiful things to read (and reread, and reread) in her wake.
Congratulations Jacqueline Woodson!
Did you know the US has a National Ambassador for Young People's Literature? They serve a two-year term (current is graphic novelist Gene Luen Yang), and the position was created in order to "raise national awareness of the importance of young people’s literature as it relates to lifelong literacy, education and the development and betterment of the lives of young people."
Jacqueline Woodson Named National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature
Happy New Year, everyone! We want to thank EVERYONE for their wonderful support over the last year - Flashlight Books has come so far in just 12 months, and 2018 is when we want to make our brick and mortar a reality!
Meanwhile, here are some middle grade and young adult 2018 releases that we're so incredibly excited about! What upcoming books are you psyched about? Let us know! (So we can carry them!)
Thank you Judith Rosen for including us in your wonderful article in PublishersWeekly! We're so excited for all the other stores, expansions, and other kidslit folks mentioned, and glad to be part of such a great, growing community!
"[Donna Paz Kaufman] regards this as “a marvelous time” to open a children’s specialty bookstore. “Millennial parents are registering for books for shower and new baby gifts. It’s wonderful to see, since they’re the first truly wired group to start families,” Kaufman noted."
Indies: We're not dead yet!
"In fact, independent bookstores around the country have seen steady growth in recent years, despite the looming sense that bookstores were struggling."
Boosting the signal for Boogie Down Books in the Bronx: Check out this great pop-up bookshop coming to the South Bronx in October! And book clubs in November! Boogie Down Books is all about supporting youth literacy and community, and is generally super awesome.
We're on twitter now! Check us out at https://twitter.com/FlashlightBooks and say hi so we have more people to follow! 😆🎉
We're not open yet (we're working on it, we promise!), but Laurel Bookstore is, and they need some extra support! Please consider helping out this East Bay bookstore - we want to help all independent bookstores succeed. Check out their store in Oakland, or order your next summer read from them online!
Two days left, and we're making our final push!
There are many perks left! Get yourself a mystery book, or a fun tote bag! And please let your local authors and teachers know about our special perks just for them!
Thank yous go out to: Sara Lautenbach, Barbara Simpson, Ethan Fletcher, Sarah Wong, rivkayp7, Rosie Begley and John Polinsky, Sara and Mike Bowen, Alice Kurtz, Kathleen Caldwell, Pete, Louisa Waldner, Ssouthwick, Christie Olson Day, Rob Pro, Hilary and Frank Stiff, Karen West, and Judith E Linn!
There are 5 days left to our campaign! We stopped by downtown Walnut Creek last week and can't wait to join such a vibrant, fun community and get books in people's hands!
Also, a reminder: this is a flexible campaign, which means even if we do not make our listed goal, we still get to keep the funds we've raised and use them toward opening Flashlight Books! So please help - every bit makes a difference!
We have new perks! Been thinking about donating, but haven't yet? Check out our page again (www.indiegogo.com/at/flashlightbooks) - we've added a few new perks, including ones especially for authors and teachers! Get recommendations for your classroom, or get your book a special spot in our window! We still need your support to open our store in Walnut Creek!
PS: Hope everyone went somewhere good for Independent Bookstore Day on Saturday! I was out of town, so I went to Harvard Book Store in Cambridge, MA and picked up "Hatchett" and "Dragonsong" for my cousin's kids!
19 days left and we're 23% funded - thank you everyone for your support so far! Please continue to let your friends and family know about our children's bookstore!
