Beautiful project combining history and art photography. Let's help John Slemp Photography get some backing so Jerrie Mock's publisher, PhoenixGraphix Publishing & Marketing Services, can help him bring this wonderful material to print!

This A-2 jacket belonged to Captain Stephen M. Hoza of the 94th Bomb Group. He married his sweetheart Delores after the war, and passed away in 2010. The religious icon hastily sewn into the jacket liner caused me to realize … Read More

Jerrie Mock's Final Flight

Posts

04.17.64: "I was switched to tower frequency and told to make a low pass down runway nine (now it's called ten because the magnetic variation in the area has changed) before setting up an approach for runway two-three. The controller said the reason for the fly by was so my NAA observers could clock me past the field. ... I had almost forgotten that in a few minutes I really would have flown around the world in Charlie and the NAA officials were at the airport waiting to fini...sh filling out the documents that they would send ... once my flight was listed in the record book, never, ever could another woman try to be the first to fly around the world solo. I felt strange. Excited. Humble. Proud. Bewildered. ... I hope I didn't bounce on the landing, but I don't remember. ... Charlie and I were on the ground. We had done it!" #‎JMockAt 9:35 p.m. Jerrie Mock touched down in Columbus OH, and became the first woman to fly solo around the world.

04.17.64: "When I was almost to Memphis, I called the control tower for a clearance through its control zone. Within a second of reading my call letters over the air, Memphis and other Flight Service States within range were calling me. ... "Three-Eight Charlie, Memphis. Request your estimate for Columbus and route." ... Gee, I didn't know how far it was to Columbus, or when I'd get there. I told them I was going by way of Bowling Green, Kentucky, and would give them an estimate for Columbus when I got over that VOR." #‎JMock ... close to becoming the first woman to successfully fly around the world!

04.17.64: "As I taxied up to the Cessna hangar, I saw a huge, excited gathering of people. ... The International President of the Ninety-Nines, Ruth Deerman, lived in El Paso and she was among those at the airport. ...The program sounded fun, but I had 1500 miles of flying before me. .... all were waiting for me in Columbus. I posed for pictures, and was made an honorary citizen of the city of El Paso. The front looked more severe than the previous forecast had indicated ... So I climbed in Charlie, waved good-bye, and taxied on to the runway, one hour and five minutes after landing.I was unhappy at disappointing all the people of El Paso ... " #‎JMock departs El Paso heading home.

04.17.64: "Next morning, I was on the roll at 6:07 MST and couldn't help thinking how much more sleep I could have had in the last month if I'd had stops like this everywhere. Of course, I hadn't left the airport, but for all the things I'd had time to see at some of my stops, I might well have stayed at all the fields.Tucson to El Paso was a short flight of 267 miles. ..." #‎JMock is on her way home!

04.17.64: Today in 1964 was a big day for Jerrie Mock, and a big day for women in aviation. Today Jerrie returns to Columbus OH, to be met by a cheering crowd of people and reporters. She thought she was secretly in Tucson, but of course everyone was keeping track of her.

04.16.64: "I thought I'd probably spend the night at Phoenix or Tucson. In fact, I had almost made up my mind on Tucson before I left Oakland. But I wanted to avoid another big crowd that would slow me down and wear me out, so I didn't tell anyone my plans. And so that noone could call me, I turned off all the radios."

04.16.64: "It was good to get Charlie back in the air. I had been on the ground in Oakland 8 minutes short of 24 hrs, and I hadn't planned more than a quick overnight stop.

And it was good to be flying in the United States. Once I cleared the Oakland control zone, I was free to fly whereever I wished. I flew VFR, without a flight plan ...I could fly all the way to Columbus without turning on a radio! I was free to wander around in the sky, to investigate unique rock formations, to dip inside hidden mountain valleys, to follow the meandering courses of canyon-sided streams. It was good to be in America."

04.16.64: The days work began. But if I couldn't sleep, I wanted to fly. ...
"Jerrie, the man who worked on the compass ... says he can't fix it."
Oh well, I was back in the land of VOR's.
"...It looks like either Tucson or Phoenix would be good stops. Which one do you want?"
I decided that for one night I'd try to get lost to everyone but myself. The Columbus Dispatch had enough stories to fill all their papers for a week. "I'll probably just make it to Phoenix. I don't kno...w."
#JMock prepares to depart Oakland on the last legs of her around the world record-setting flight!

04.15.64: "Russ brought up a shy girl of about 19... Darlene Ceremello, told me how thrilled she was to meet me and then explained that she was about to enter a... convent and "must give away" all her worldy possessions. One of her most precious was a gold St. Christopher's medal, and she wanted me to have it, so I would be protected from harm.
I didn't understand why the medal wasn't permitted in the convent, but put it on my charm bracelet and promised to wear it constantly. After flying over the Pacific alone, with only God to protect me, I realized the power of His grace. I was grateful for the prayers of this girl, and of all the other people who had prayed for my safety. Russ told me that back home, the minister of a church had phoned to tell him that his whole congregation was saying prayers for me." #JMock in CA
