When Ghoncheh Ghavami decided to take a stand this past June to protest Iran’s ban on women attending volleyball games, she likely did not figure she’d spend the rest of the summer and fall sitting in a miserable prison cell. Ms. Ghavami, who just turned 26, surely also did not predict that her call for equality would generate hundreds of thousands of supportive voices from aro...und the world.
The outpouring of support for this brave young woman has truly been extraordinary and I do believe, although cannot prove it, that the outrage at her imprisonment, expressed by so many thousands of people around the world—including many Amnesty International activists—contributed to the Iranian government’s decision to release her on bail on Sunday, pending the outcome of her appeal against her one-year prison sentence (plus two-year travel ban) for “spreading propaganda against the system.”
While activists have reason to be gratified that Ghoncheh Ghavami is no longer in prison, we still must remind the Iranian government that we call for all charges to be dropped against her.
زمانی که غنچه قوامی تصمیم گرفت در مقابل ممنوعیت حضور زنان در مسابقات والیبال بایستد، احتمالا گمان نمیکرد بقیه تابستان و پاییز را در یک سلول دلگیر بگذراند. خانم قوامی که تازگی ها بیست و شش ساله شده احتمالا پیش بینی هم نمی کرد که فراخوانش به برابری [جنسیتی] صدها هزار صدای حامی در اطراف جهان تولید کند.

Susan Moshtaghian's statement about her daughter's temporary release:

Ghoncheh returned home from prison. We picked her up at 3 pm from Qarchak prison. She is bailed out till her court of appeal. We thank all of you that stayed with us and I hope the court accept the complete innocence of my daughter. Thank god.

Yesterday morning I went to the attorney's office with your father. The attorney's deputy told us any new charges have been dropped and the case has been sent back to branch 26 with the charge propaganda against the state. They say you have worked with foreign press. How could they accuse you of this? You only wrote an article about the pressures of economic ...sanctions on Iranian women and how they should stand up against these sanctions. Does it mean that the authorities are happy about the sanctions? If they prosecute you for this reason, we will be gladly proud of you. I cried in the taxi for the whole journey. I never though that one day I would pray for a verdict to arrive for something you have never done. Mr Alizadeh Tabatabaee had another bizarre interview last night. God, what is going on? I could not believe the words he was uttering. He stood by our side in the past 140 days and defended your rights. How could he tell lies about your case and the court hearing? After two days of no communication, we finally went to his house and found him. I still could not understand why he said all those words but he resigned and now I have to find you a new lawyer.
