My latest article, a long piece in the New York Review of Books on Trumpism, the 2020 election, and the lessons Americans can learn from the UK and Russia--and even Spain in the 1930s! Populism is hard to beat, but the way to do it isn't by using Trump's weapons of demagoguery and division against him. Unity and sanity are required, and soon.
"The GOP sees Trump not as an embarrassment to endure but as a working model to perpetuate. What Trump believes matters not at all; it ...only matters that he won and holds power. Worst of all, Trumpism looks set to outlast Trump himself—with whichever equally unqualified family member tries to succeed him in the finest autocratic tradition. Trump’s victory in the 2016 election validated his personal bombastic political style. There is still time to relegate it as a terrible mistake, a tragic fluke of tiny electoral college margins, an unpopular opponent, foreign intervention, and media gullibility. But Trump’s reelection in 2020 would validate his political methods and have a long-lasting impact on America and the world."

If we can call lies lies and nonsense nonsense, the truth has a chance! We can disagree on priorities, methods, and every sort of political belief. But we cannot let there be a red state reality and a blue state reality. Facts are facts.
What the Republicans are doing during these impeachment hearings is not spin or typical political double-speak. It'...s lying. They are spreading false information that they know is false. That much of it was concocted by Putin to damage the US and weaken American support of Ukraine makes it even worse.
Trump may be gullible enough to believe whatever Putin puts in his head, and Giuliani will believe anything anyone pays him to believe, apparently. But the Congressional GOP falling into line behind them to smear US diplomats, national security, and law enforcement is disgusting and dangerous.
