For a true story of how democracy can die, the paperback of Winter Is Coming is out today. (But vote first!)

The stunning story of Russia’s slide back into a dictatorship—and how the West is now paying the price for allowing it to happen. The ascension of Vladimir Putin—a former lieutenant colonel of the KGB—to the presidency of Russia in 1999 was a strong signal that the country was...

A nice reference to my book, but most important is that they realize this crisis is just not about Trump. He is only a harbinger, a warning of what will come if America doesn't stand up for itself and the values of freedom and democracy it used to proudly represent. Winter is coming, but we can make it much milder by changing our ways. Celebrating a victory on Tuesday and then cowering under the blankets until the next Trump arrives is the wrong response. America cannot hide its light; the world needs it more than ever.

Averting the worst effects of this year’s political storm means electing Hillary Clinton.

For a humorous moment during these serious days, the transcript here of my appearance with Maria Bartiromo today has a small mistake... I said "they want to create chaos", not "create cows"!! Maybe I need to work on my pronunciation of that one, but "cows"?! Lol!

As for the real topics, if your only response to how Trump is a catastrophic threat to US and global security for a dozen demostrated reasons is to point out examples of Clinton corruption, you are blinded by personal or partisan hatred.

Russian chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov thinks Hillary Clinton is the “second worst candidate in U.S. history,” and he doesn’t care much for Donald Trump either.

Don't let the trolls tell you there's nothing going on. This isn't a case of "where there's smoke, there's fire." There is already a fire and it's spreading.

In February 2014, the Obama administration was embarrassed when a secretly recorded phone conversation between the U.S. ambassador in Ukraine and Victoria Nuland, a senior State Department official, was posted on YouTube.

An astounding amount of new detail in this article. It should be crystal clear to all by now that Trump's Putin connections are a national security issue, not just a partisan political one.

By the way, I'll be on Fox Business tomorrow early on Mornings with Maria Batiromo to discuss these topics.

Watch this. It's funny and also very important. This interview with two workers in a Russian "troll factory" is remarkable, but also only confirms what my colleagues and I have been warning about for several years. A great deal of what you see on social media and in comment sections around the world are targeted propaganda. Many thousands of Twitter and Facebook accounts (including the comments here, of course), thousands of comments every day on every political article, it's a huge impact.

Note that it's not just opinions. Fomenting anger and hatred is a big part of their agenda as well. It poisons society and turns people against each other -- which is exactly what Putin is trying to do. The West needs to wake up to these tactics because they are real and they work.

Trump says Russia isn't influencing our election, and so do these Russian trolls who are being paid to influence our election. Watch Full Frontal with Samant...

Principles over party. Betraying that simple maxim is how the GOP ended up with a dangerous fool like Trump as the nominee instead of a conservative.

A quick message from me to you.

The number of smoking guns in Trump's connections with Russia are now enough to form a firing squad! In August, in the NY Daily News, I wrote about Putin's use of "soft power" influence in business and the media in the free world. As a KGB man, Putin has always understood that these relationships can last longer and be more useful than those with elected officials, who come and go. Businessmen and private companies are also under far less scrutiny.

It would only be a surprise... if Putin's forces had *not* worked to recruit Trump. It would also only be a surprise if they failed. Considering the incredible, politically suicidal loyalty Trump has shown to Putin so far, it's hard to imagine otherwise. Or you can call all of these connections and Trump's loyalty to Putin a coincidence. But, as I wrote, I grew up in the USSR with guys like Putin running the show. I believe in coincidences, but I also believe in the KGB.

My new op-ed in The NY Times. America, Your Election Isn't Rigged (I know what one looks like!) ...

When fake elections at home aren’t enough, an aggressive campaign of intimidation and disinformation abroad can be very useful. The Russian news leads every day with Mr. Trump and WikiLeaks and how they are supposedly exposing the corrupt reality of American democracy. Mr. Putin can no longer pretend to be a democratic leader, so his goal is to drag everyone else down to his le...vel — and he is doing it with Mr. Trump’s help.

A democracy is as strong as its people believe it to be. It cannot be destroyed from the outside, only from within.

So Trump goes to the site of Abraham Lincoln's most famous speech to bury the party Lincoln founded. Was Ford's Theater unavailable?

Do yourself a favor, skip Trump's lies, threats, and hatred and reread Lincoln's magnificent speech instead: http://www.abrahamlincolnonline.org/…/speech…/gettysburg.htm

On June 1, 1865, Senator Charles Sumner referred to the most famous speech ever given by President Abraham Lincoln. In his eulogy on the slain president, he called the Gettysburg Address a "monumental act." He said Lincoln was mistaken that "the world will little note, nor long remember what we say…

A tragedy, and not an inevitable one. Remember how Hugo Chavez was treated like a savior by so many on the left in the free world, even as he eroded democracy and attacked the free market economy while oil prices were high? Even when it became clear Maduro was turning to outright repression, Venezuela's democracy received very little support from the free world. My best wishes for the people of Venezuela. The Human Rights Foundation will be fighting for you.

The suspension of the recall process for Nicolas Maduro is a massive setback for democracy in Venezuela.

A solid article, but of course this is the sort of firmness against Putin's aggression that could have avoided so much trouble and saved many lives had it been adopted three, five, or ten years ago. And despite the fact that it is now painfully obvious that engaging and appeasing Putin has failed, it is still far from guaranteed that the West, especially the US and EU, will fight back.

"Above all the West needs to keep its head. Russian interference in America’s presidentia...l election merits measured retaliation. But the West can withstand such “active measures”. Russia does not pretend to offer the world an attractive ideology or vision. Instead its propaganda aims to discredit and erode universal liberal values by nurturing the idea that the West is just as corrupt as Russia, and that its political system is just as rigged. It wants to create a divided West that has lost faith in its ability to shape the world. In response, the West should be united and firm."

The commentators are missing the point that the two most outrageous moments of tonight's debate are directly connected. Trump's unprecedented declaration that he may not accept the results of the election and his absolute refusal to put the blame on Putin's Russia for hacking or anything else are both scandalous, but they not separate positions at all.

The goal of Putin's propaganda and cyberattacks are to discredit American democracy, to make Americans fear and hate each oth...er and to distrust the very system that makes the United States such a powerful force in the world. This also serves Putin well domestically, where Russian news, all state controlled, is full of announcements about the US election being rigged, despite a total lack of evidence. If even America's elections are fake, goes their argument, how can anyone complain about Russia's sham elections?

Tonight Trump announced himself loud and clear to be an agent of Putin's goals to destabilize the United States and its democratic process. He constantly repeats Russian propaganda that America is weak and corrupt. Then Trump demonstrated that he is fiercely loyal to Putin, beyond any possible political advantage. These two positions go together. Trump is Putin's stooge and he just confessed to it on stage in Las Vegas.

I've been pointing out the slide of Wikileaks into a full-blown anti-American KGB operation for a while now. This presidential campaign has made it entirely obvious, along with exposing Putin's other propaganda outlets and meddling. Something we can actually thank Trump for, if indirectly!

On a related note, the media's obsession with the Democrats' stolen emails has actually wasted time that could have gone to pressing her on real issues of policy.

'Based on his own words, this is Donald Trump's "President Day One" checklist:

1) Jail his opponent.
2) Crack down on the media.
3) Support Syrian dictator Bashar Assad.

Coincidentally, this was also Vladimir Putin's checklist.'
'Remembering my friend and colleague Boris Nemtsov on his birthday today. Please remember his life and his words and his works, not just his assassination. Boris was the best of us all and his fight for a free and just Russia goes on.'
'Good to appear on This Week with George Stephanopoulos today. Yes, I've been right about Putin (and right about Trump), but this does not make me happy! My evaluations and predictions are warnings about things I desperately do not want to happen, with the intent of convincing those in power to alter course before it's too late. Of course I haven't been alone in warning the West that Putin could never be trusted in Ukraine or Syria. And many other conservatives predicted that Trump would be a total disaster if he won the GOP nomination and that he's entirely unfit to be president.

Soon Trump will move on to his next scam, scandal, and TV show. Putin will stay, and he will not stop. For Putin, Trump is simply a convenient tool to use in his main goal of weakening the nations and alliances with the power to deter him. Putin has declared war on NATO, the EU, and the US, and supporting the worst political elements in the free world is one way Putin wages this war. (Along with 24/7 propaganda.) Putin directly and indirectly supports the far-right, anti-EU groups across Europe, and Brexit, and naturally, Trump.

Putin would be happy to have Trump as an easily manipulated US president, of course. But mostly Putin wants to create chaos and division. Trump is ideal for that, and also the themes of ethnic and religious conflict, class war, and, especially, a lack of confidence in the institutions of democracy and the free market that make the US so strong. That is why the Kremlin trolls are pushing so hard on the themes of the US elections being "stolen" if Trump loses and of the "rigged" DNC, etc.

As an old Soviet KGB man, Putin takes from the old Soviet KGB playbook: the best way to destroy your rivals is to get them to destroy themselves. Get Americans to hate America and each other; get Americans to stop believing in their own democratic institutions and the core concepts of inclusiveness, immigration, trade, and individual freedom that make America such a powerful force and positive example in the world. (Unfortunately, Obama has gone along willingly with this plan in foreign policy.) So when you read another negative post or hateful comment, or another threat about unrest after the election, keep in mind there are literally thousands of Kremlin employees posting this garbage and that it is targeted at what they see as fault lines in America and the West.

This is not to say that every Trump supporter is a Kremlin dupe, or that there are not many legitimate problems facing America and the world today. There are, and the economic fears and difficulties faced by the middle class are real. But the solution is a positive, ambitious agenda for innovation and growth. The solutions will come from more free market competition, more brilliant entrepreneurs, and more eager immigrants. The solution will come from America being more like America, not less.'
'I don't care if Trump has been trained or hypnotized and sounds like a combination of Lincoln, Churchill, and Reagan tonight. We already know who and what he is: a vile and ignorant demagogue who cares only for himself. His track record of hatred and lies is crystal clear for all to see. Debates are unpredictable (one reason Putin has never participated in one in his life) and can be useful. But they can also be a brief and superficial show that has little to do with qualifications for office. Even if Trump uses his years of reality television practice and manages to control himself for 90 minutes, he is and will remain totally unfit for the office of president.'

'I've spent much of the summer in beautiful Croatia, as I have nearly every year for decades. It used to be my training camp; now it is a family retreat with kids and a baby and rarely a chessboard in sight! I'm based in NYC now, but Croatia will always feel like home. Another difference is that I am now a Croatian citizen, and so politics here take on more meaning to me.

With a tight parliamentary election looming on September 11, I'm struck by the contrast with the election getting far more attention, in America. The main party leaders in the Croatian race are former prime minister Zoran Milanović and parliamentarian Andrej Plenković. I've had the pleasure to get to know them both, and I can say that Croatia is blessed with a very difficult choice! Both men are young, impressive, and well-respected leaders—educated, experienced, and intelligent, multi-lingual and pro-Europe, and both want to move Croatia forward into a dynamic future with ambitious education and economic platforms.

My family owes Zoran Milanović a great debt for granting us citizenship in our time of need, so I cannot be entirely objective in my analysis. But since it seems that my wife Dasha and I will split the family votes, we will have no impact on the result anyway! The future looks very bright for Croatia with choices like this one.

Compare that to the American presidential race, where voters are cursed with a difficult choice. With Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, most voters are "against", not "for". Based on polls, Americans don't like either candidate and believe that both have disqualifying flaws, but hate one more than the other. This approximates my own position, which is that Hillary is second-worst candidate imaginable and yet the GOP nominated the very worst. Honestly I feel lucky I cannot vote in the US this year!

A democracy is only as good as the candidates it produces. By that measurement, Croatian democracy is looking far healthier than the USA's. Both candidates have a positive agenda for the future and want the best for the country—not for themselves or some hidden interests—and so no matter what happens on election day Croatia is already a winner.'
