“The underlying concerns are the same for us as they would be in … a traditional ‘no-promo-homo’ law,” said Nathan Smith, public policy director at GLSEN. “We think that it’s bad broadly for LGBTQ students in South Dakota.”

GLSEN shared HuffPost Queer Voices's post.
Jason Collins is a trailblazer, a longtime GLSEN partner and a past Respect Awards honoree. His coming out provided opportunities for black LGBTQ youth and all LGBTQ youth of color to see their experience more clearly reflected in sports. Thank you, Jason!
Today in our celebration of black LGBTQ icons during #BlackHistoryMonth, we recognize Jason Collins.
Collins, a former NBA star, made history in 2013 when he be...came the first male U.S. athlete in a major professional sport to come out as gay. He set a precedent for queer people living authentically in a world governed by pressures to conform and hierarchies of masculinity.
“I didn’t set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport," Collins said at the time. "But since I am, I’m happy to start the conversation. I wish I wasn’t the kid in the classroom raising his hand and saying, ‘I’m different.’ If I had my way, someone else would have already done this. Nobody has, which is why I’m raising my hand.”
We're so glad you did. Today, we celebrate you, Jason!

We need more foster and adoptive homes—not fewer. States’ child welfare systems are often overwhelmed, and more than 20,000 children age out of the system each year without finding their forever family. Amid this crisis, states are granting child placement agencies license to claim a religious reason to turn away otherwise qualified LGBTQ prospective parents or mistreat LGBTQ youth in foster care. Join our storytelling campaign to raise awareness about anti-LGBTQ discrimination in foster care and adoption! #WelcomingAllFamilies via Center for American Progress
#LGBTQ youth attending school in these states face a more hostile school climate than other LGBTQ students.
