Come party with Soul Club and special guest DJ Shazam Bangles (Boogie Munsters, Cutz on Cutz)!...
Born during a visionary era in Chicago’s underground DJ culture, Shazam Bangles has cemented his reputation as an elite dj with undeniable range and talent. In his teenage years, Bangles was drawn to the rebellious style and technical prowess of mix tape and college radio DJs on stations such at WHPK and WNUR, which led him to chopping up his burgeoning record collection into primitive pause tapes. His passionate style is rooted in sound system culture and Chicago's homegrown style of mixing, which he has been constantly refining over nearly 20 years of djing.
Constantly expanding his vinyl archives, he prides himself on his ability to process eternity through his sets and a spontaneous ability to rock a party. He's able to collectively engage an audience through a tasteful selection of sample-based music; playing with musical quotations in a similar manner as jazz, while introducing audiences to modern dancefloor energetics via newly unearthed gems.
He has been a catalyst in preserving turntable culture as a member of the influential show/scratch DJ crew, Cutz On Cuts, which established itself in 2010. The concept of the show was to feature one DJ/producer, while 3 other dj's and musicians would add samples, dialogue, and tasteful scratching with fluency. They were able to breathe some much-needed life back into the scene via legendary loft parties and landmark live shows with dj's such as Rob Swift.
Shazam is a founding member of The Boogie Munsters, a reputable band of record jocks that have established themselves as the #1 Chicago-based Boogie Funk DJ Crew. The Munsters are well equipped in the games of Disco/Funk/Boogie/House/Hip Hop/Punk Rock and all music of style and taste.
He has been fortunate to dj for/play alongside a wide array of people he looks up to from here and abroad such as PUTS, Animal Collective, DJ Krush, Jamie 3:26, Run The Jewels, Donnell Pitman, D-Styles, Mark Grusane, Kool Keith, Zernell, Edan, DJ Darryn, DJ Rashad, Nightmares On Wax, Tone B. Nimble, etc.
Shazam can be found at his most technical within a Cutz On Cuts-style set in Pilsen, or at his most funky flipping records with The Boogie Munsters at their monthly trend-killing rooftop parties in Wicker Park. Bangles can be heard rocking on the radio as part of Vocalo’s (WBEZ affiliate) DJ Collective the first Friday of every month on 91.1fm. He was selected to be part of the Collective after winning an open format “Quest For The Best” DJ Competition in 2012.
As the beat continues on…
