Nicaragua Is Ready for Its Close-Up Time is a relative concept in Nicaragua. In a matter of a few hours, you can peer into the primeval mouth of an active volcano, still bubbling after its eruption thousands of years ago … witness the creation of pre-Columbian artisanal crafts at a bustling market that seems frozen in the past … stroll among centuries-old colonial architecture in one of the oldest cities in the New World … and bask in the smiles of a 21st-century nation that has put its turbulent past behind it to become one of the safest and most welcoming places in Central America.

You really can't beat the deals on self fly/drive packages. My week in Italy was wonderful and hotels were very nice- better than expected. The town we stayed in was picture perfect in the Tuscan hi...lls. We were central to all of the big cities like Florence and Pisa, but I found the small Tuscan towns to be better than the metropolitan places. Every one says the driving in Italy is horrible, but in the countryside, it is just like any rural place. I do, however, recommend learning some street sign meanings. The only challenge driving was through Milan, (and trying not to stare out the window at the gorgeous views ). All the roundabouts are a bit of a pain, but I'll take that over driving in San francisco any day!
Almost every bad review I've read is because people don't do their own due diligence, don't research anything about the country they are visiting (or the language), don't read the receipt or itenerary ( or fine print), or don't have common sense in general.
We had great customer service, and the onsite agent was wonderful and extremely helpful. One of the rental cars broke down, and there was no way to get it back to Milan, so they offered a refund for the car and reimbursment for a train ticket back, as well as offered pickup at the station.
If you're expecting a 5 star luxury St. Regis-type vacation, or need to be coddled through, this is not it, and you won't find it at this price, so you probably cant afford it anyway. If you want to explore and experience the true culture of the country on your own schedule , it is perfect.
The flights were great, beautiful hotels, and car was hassle free. The packages take the stress out of planning the three headaches of travel-air, hotel, and transportation. Can't wait for the next one!

I have taken 13 tours with Gate 1, enough to earn a surprise, very nice suitcase from them a couple years ago. I used to think I would travel with Gate 1 forever. I’ve had minor frustrations with rece...nt tours, but I’ve booked two more with them. As I was booking the second tour, I noticed that my middle name (as reflected in my Gate 1 account) was incorrect. I have no idea how it became incorrect after 13 prior bookings in their system. I manually changed/corrected the name and proceeded to book the trip, only to notice the name had reverted to the incorrect version.

I just received a call from Gate 1 that my middle name is different on my two active reservations with them. I was told that an agent had called me 2/6 to rectify this (I have no record of this call; when I said as much, I was told, “Well, the agent said they called”) and I was chided for not calling in to correct the mistake in the first place. I was told I could pay a minimum of $50 to have it corrected on both/each of my reservations, but that it might wind up being more because the flights are with different carriers.

I am never going to book with Gate 1 again.

We just returned from a 15 day tour of India and Nepal. Accommodations were great, but the first hotel in New Delhi was somewhat dated. The Park hotel seemed old, but our room was clean, but could h...ave used some work. A positive note was that it was ideally located. Food everywhere was great with tremendous breakfast buffets. The food everywhere was a bit spicy which was to be expected for traditional Indian food. My husband , however, could not eat the spice, and the tour guide, Kapil, went above and beyond to arrange for meals with minimal spice. He even arranged for the hotel to send up a special dessert for my husband's birthday. Tours to all sites were well orchestrated, but I really don't know how our driver navigated the streets and traffic. You should expect a lot of time on the buses due to traffic, which is a tour in and of itself. Really no traffic laws in place but a hoot to watch as a spectator sport. This was an active tour that required a fair amount of walking, but was certainly realistic for our age group. Included in the tour are first hand experiences, such a ride in a tuk-tuk ( 3 wheeled bike-cab), ox cart, elephant jungle safari ride, boat ride, elephant ride to one of the forts, as well as excursions to palaces , temples, and of course the Taj. All in all, our tour guide, Kapil, and local tour guides, made our trip a wonderful adventure. Our travel companions from diverse experiences only added to our enjoyment. This was not our first tour with Gate 1 and will not be our last. Kudos to Kapil and Gate 1. See More

My friend and I I just returned from Affordable Budapest, Vienna, and Prague ( October 24-31). We had a wonderful time from start to finish. We were met by a representative at the airport and without ...any waiting, were whisked to our hotel. Our tour leader, Julian met us in the lobby and after a few suggestions, gave us our keys to our room. The next day, our whirlwind six-day sampling of Budapest, Vienna, Bratislava ( an optional tour), and Prague began!! (Yes!! It certainly WAS a "If this is Tuesday, this must be Belgium " kind of tour!!) Although fast-paced, we enjoyed every minute, as the highlights of each city were visited and explained.

Julian was knowledgeable and attentive and happy to give suggestions in each city. Although we didn't have any issues, Julian did his best to handle any problems that members of our group may have encountered. One day, through no fault of his, our lunch stop lost power due to heavy rains and extremely strong winds!! No lights in the restaurant and credit cards could not be used!!To lift our spirits, after we arrived in Prague, Julian added an extra tour to our trip with no cost to us. We took the tram to the Old City and after a mini-tour, Julian treated us all to
hot drinks at Cafe Mozart and even
joined some of us for dinner. This was Julian's free time for himself and a chance to escape from all of us!! Yet he chose to spend it with the group!!

Optional tours were offered for an additional cost, but there was no pressure to purchase. My favorites were the Illumination Danube River Dinner Cruise in Budapest and the side trip to Bratislava, Slovakia. Each hotel offered other tours and several in our group bought the Hop On/ Hop Off tickets in each city and had a
marvelous time. Personally speaking, I wish I had researched how to tour the stables of the Lippizaner Spanish Riding School in Vienna.

Gabel, our bus driver, was a professional and careful driver and always punctual. We always felt very safe traveling with him.

Hotels were fine, but just be aware that because of the low tour price, they may not be in the center of the town. Also, be sure to make any requests with Gate 1 when you reserve the tour. Rooms will usually be twin beds, unless a request is made. My friend and I wish we had requested rooms close by, as in one hotel we were on different floors and in another hotel, on different wings. Breakfasts in all our hotels offered many choices in the full buffet.

I would definitely tour with Gate 1 again. Carefully read all information, so you can decide if Gate 1 is for you. If you desire more INCLUDED frills, you may decide that an upgraded tour better fits your needs. My friend and I
had researched many tour companies and had determined that for us, this affordable tour seemed the best fit. We were not disappointed.

Booked through Gate 1 via Groupon for my honeymoon. We went to London, Paris, and Rome. It seems as though they started us with the best accommodations and then got rapidly worse. In London, we were i...n a DoubleTree, in King's Cross. It was lovely! In Paris, we stayed in a horrible part of town, with a run down hotel. The A/C and toilet were both broken. Dirty, dirty hotel with bugs and stains on the carpet and construction happening constantly. In Rome was even worse. We were so far away from any of the sites, so transportation ended up being double what we budgeted for. I have Lupus and got very sick. Before leaving Paris we called the company to see if we could just change our flights to go home early instead of going to Rome, because I got sick. They said, no problem, and there would be no change in airfare cost, but they would require $600 to change the flights. I had to keep traveling very ill because we don't have an extra $600 lying around. We were very disappointed that our honeymoon was so unpleasant and anxiety-inducing. We will not be using Gate 1 ever again. The 2 stars are because London actually was quite pleasant- everything went downhill from there. See More

OK, so a friend and I were traveling to NY to catch a flight to the UK for vacation. Due to hurricane Nate, we missed our flight. #VirginAtlantic was willing to change flight for $300, but Gate1trave...l got involved and screwed us

Spoke to Shruti (24 hour emergency contact) at 630am and conferenced her in with the #VirginAtlantic rep who had to school Shruti on how to handle the account.

Spoke to Francesa at 930am. She was helpful and sympathetcic. Took information and promised to call us back - which she did.

At 1130am Francesca called back to tell us that the ticket had been released but we had to rebook at a cost of 2K. She handed the call to Jennifer the supervisor who was the worst.

Jennifer basically called me a liar several times even though she admitted that it could be possible that the agent told us one thing but entered in different notes. BTW Jennifer have you reviewed those tapes yet? Probably not!

In the end, #Gate1Travel had the flight cancelled and then wanted us to rebook at a cost of $2K a piece. Total trip was $1300 a piece. Not only did #Gate1Travel cancel both flight segments but subsequently cancelled the entire trip including hotel. But get this, #Gate1Travel gets to keep our money! In my opinion Gate1Travel is a sham of a company with unscrupulous behavior. BTW, I wish I had known #Gate1Travel had 2.5 stars on #Yelp before booking. #shadey #buyerbeware #thievesinthetemple #Gate1Travel #ripoffartists #BBBComplaint

I have taken 9 trips with Gate1. They are the best. I have been on 8 escorted and one independent tour. I have been everywhere from Italy to Equador and have had wonderful experiences and great times.... It is more of the world for less. this is a wonderful company. I do tell everyone that I come in contact with about Gate1, so they can travel at a great price as well. When Hurricane Irma was pounding our home, we were in Germany and Gate1 helped us, In fact, Clare Murphy was very helpful and caring in our time of worry. Thank you Gate 1 for your wonderful company. Went on a ten day tour of Peru, with Elvis as our guide. We had the best time! It was my first experience with Gate 1. Every detail was taken care of for us. The hotels were great, the food was amazin...g and we stayed busy the entire time we were there. After speaking with the other guests on the tour during our welcome meeting, only one other couple was on their first Gate 1 trip. The rest had used them multiple times, some as many as ten. I was floored! I was optimistic that could only mean good things and it did. Elvis, our guide, had the best personality and told us all about the areas, the history, interesting facts, folk tales and a bit about the local political process. He was extremely patient and caring with a couple elderly gentlemen with our group, giving them much needed assistance and guidance. Nobody got lost and everyone was looked after carefully, but still treated with dignity and respect. We had a smaller group of only 20 and the group dynamic was great! Everyone got along quite well... no flare ups to be had, lots of laughs and I walked away feeling like I just made some new friends. I will use this company again and hope for the same outcome. I heard many positive things from the rest of the group, that leads me to believe Gate 1 does everything they can to make the experience great... you just need to have the right attitude and realize they can't control everything. Gate 1 did a great tour of Peru, until the Hurricane created a snag. After that it was 4 days of phone calls and rearranging reservations. It took me 4 different customer service representatives until... someone would actually help us get back home. Gate 1 and Latam Airline just kept blaming each other while meanwhile our tour director left and we were stuck in Lima. Gate 1 seemed to be under the impression the tour director would help us, and the tour director continued to state that he was not allowed to help us at all in any way with our flights or connections or bookings.

I will say that the trip was great up until that point, and eventually Gate 1 did get my family and I home. I will however never forget the more than 15 hours I spent on the phone over the course of 4 days to make it happen, not to mention the exhaustion and stress of worrying and not knowing anything.

Many others in our group had previous and satisfactory relationships with Gate 1 travel, but in the end most of them had to pay to fly themselves home, and our family was the only one who stuck it out on the phone with them trying to find solutions instead of having to drop an additional 6K on plane tickets to get us home. The final customer service agent I finally spoke to seemed to be surprised that we were still stuck in Lima 3 days later.

In any case, I have serious mixed feelings about this company, but just in case, book all your own air travel so you have some control. The most common things I kept hearing from the airline and the Gate 1 agents were, "I'm sorry but there is nothing we can do for you." and in hilarity from a couple agents "we can't do that much about it, we are just travel agents." A special shout out to the wonderful woman in the Gate 1 air department that finally got us home and handled me sobbing on the phone that I was worried we would all lose our jobs with calm and serenity. She became my angel.

I don't ever want to feel that helpless when out of the country ever again. From now on my air travel will only ever be booked through delta or travelocity.

Washington was our outstanding tour guide on our 11/18-26 Peru trip including Lima, Cusco, Machu Picchu, Puno & Lake Titicaca. He was knowledgeable, passionate & obviously proud of his heritage & coun...try. It was amazing how well Washington herded the group around on the many trains, airplanes & buses during our tour. Jose, Roberto (Freddy Kruger) & Alex also stepped in for optional tours or to help Washington & they were also wonderful as well as our drivers maneuvering around Lima especially. Fortunately none of our group was badly affected by the altitude or any stomach/intestine issues from the water. It was a fantastic trip with great weather, itinerary, optional tours & a fun group! Highly recommend Gate 1 for the Peru trip! See More

If your trip runs smoothly, Gate 1 is great. However, if you run into bumps they will not help you or refund you. To make a very long story short, Gate 1 reserved my rental car in Italy in Bologna, al...though I was flying into Milan. I called them, they said they changed it. Well, we flew into Milan and went to rent my car and guess what? Car rental Agent tells me my car is in Bologna., reservation was never changed. We paid Gate 1 $300 extra to make sure we had an automatic car as my husband can't drive stick. (Im too young to rent a car) The only other auto they had in Milan was a sports car that we were going to have to pay extra for. We paid for it and right after got hit by a truck on our way to our hotel. Since there were not other auto cars at the Milan location we had to use public transport the rest of our trip. We got back to the States and I emailed Gate 1 all our documents, police report, reservations, everything. They finally contacted me after I had to leave repeated voicemails for Vicki (who never answers her phone). She essentially told me that I was shit out of luck and they would not be refunding me. All I am asking for is the $300 extra we paid for. Reasonable request considering the hell we went through that day. THEY messed up the reservation. They keep making bullshit excuses, sending me straight to voicemail and their customer service is atrocious. I will be taking them to small claims court to get my money back. Why would anyone want to pay for a car they didn't get to use? Even if the reservation was the car rental companies fault, and the wreck was truck drivers fault, nothing was my fault and I am the one being punished. Why would they keep my $300 if I didn't even get to use the car we paid for? Stay away from Gate 1 or plan your trip yourself, you'll save yourself money and a headache. See More

One star is too many. My reservation number is 1279012 and what this company has done to me is horrible. My partner and I had booked a trip to Greece in March. He died and I wanted to make it just ...me going. We had fully paid for 2, and by the time Gate 1 Travel finished, I would owe and additional $415.00. I paid for 2 and the single trip was much less. I will never use this company again. I usually book through another travel site, but decided to give Gate 1 one more try. I had used them previously for Croatia and Turkey and it was okay. Horrible company and beware if you book through them See More

I've been on 2 Gate 1 trips now, the first was a guided tour of Israel and the second an independent tour of Italy with 3 local guide tours in each city. Israel was absolutely incredible, especially c...onsidering the price. The value was truly unbelievable! Our guide Tal was amazing. It was a really great trip! Italy was also perfect for us as I'd been before. The slower, independent pace was just what I wanted. I still learned a lot from the local tours that were included even having been there before. The value again was great! I look forward to our next trip, India, with Gate 1 in the fall! See More

If you are a Latino, use a cane or walker, and over the age of 55 years old, don't travei with this company because they discriminate against you. They don't follow the USA rules protecting persons wi...th disabilities. This company claims that they don't need to follow the ADA rules because the tours are overseas. We went to Portugal with them on October 2017 and were kicked out of the tour because we broke their rules not to use a walker, and they actually sent us back to the USA the first day of our 18 days of Portugal and Morocco. We are in the process of fighting for a refund. See More

I wish there were more stars to give. Five just doesn't seem like enough. Gate 1 thought of everything and made sure we could just kick back and enjoy. Our tour guide through the Holy Land was Gai and... he was absolutely fabulous. I've been on four trips with Gate1 and all have been fantastic. I was a bit nervous at first because of the reviews I will be honest, but I was even more impressed how professionally and timely they h...andled our minor transfer issue on our last trip. Our driver did not show up to take us to the airport so we took a taxi. I saved my receipts immediately contacted Gate1, and were able to refund me in full with no issues. The tour managers have been great, always providing extra treats and keeping safety a priority. The hotels are great, included dinners, city tours and all. I've been on trips where a Gate1 rep met us at our layover to take us to the next gate. Look forward to another adventure with Gate1. See More

We were able to enjoy a honeymoon in Italy thanks to a Gate 1 Groupon that I found. I was a bit apprehensive to purchase a vacation on Groupon but went for it anyway...so glad we did!

The agent on... the phone was very helpful and friendly. All of the tour guides in Italy were fantastic, especially Ricardo in Florence. He was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about what he does and I felt honored to get to learn from him. We were happy with all of the hotels as well. The itinerary packet that was given to us was very thorough and well put together.

We can’t wait to plan our next Gate 1 vacation!

Greece is no stranger to cuisine. In fact, it was a Greek, Archestratos, who wrote the first cookbook in history, in 320 B.C. Today, the Mediterranean diet consistently wins praise for its proven health benefits. Local dishes exude the steadfast character of their origins – fava in Santorini, masticha in Chios, amygdalota in Mykonos, cheese pie with honey in Crete. But no matter where you visit, you’ll encounter the pleasures of freshly baked breads and a bounty of vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and zucchinis.

Ancient poet Homer praised the Greek island of Corfu as “rich and beautiful.” About 2,500 years later, the Ionian Sea gem still boasts plenty to rhapsodize about. Inland, the rolling countryside is home to quaint small towns and verdant olive groves, while elegant modern resorts compete for attention along the sandy coast. Playground of early Venetians and a long-time respite from court life for European royalty, Corfu’s natural beauty and rustic charm lured some of its earliest visitors to live here, including one eccentric empress.
