My husband and I have been coming here every season for over 20 years. When I was 12 or 11 my uncle would take my family here just to escape the city heat. This is an amazing jewel that you never want... to stop coming to. Thanks to all who work there and volunteer there. See More

Walking around the refuge is healing...calms the nerves, is energizing, gives me hope and restores my spirit! I think Rachel Corson says it best .....“Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth fi...nd reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts. There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature -- the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter.”

I love the swamp. You can always find herons and egrets there, and usually much more.

Mostly we see Northern Waterthrush in migration at Heinz, but some sharp-eyed folks get to see the Louisiana WT too. Thanks to Mary Beth Spitler Mundy for sharing this skulky little bird with us!
