I caught a segment on CBS' Sunday Morning about a teenage boy--Rishi Sharma--who has made it his goal to interview as many WWII survivors as possible.
He has interviewed over 800 survivors either in-person or on the phone, and he records the in-person interview to give to the survivor's family. He hugs and thanks each of them for their service. By the way--Rishi is a child of Indian immigrants.
The segment brought me to tears for two reasons:
...1.) 400 WWII survivors die each day.
2.) I grew up during a time when everyone's grandfather was a WWII survivor. So many of these men--and women--are gone now, and it breaks my heart. I'm so inspired that a young person cares to preserve these incredible stories.
Link to video is in the comments. I highly recommend watching it.

Betty Reid Soskin is an inspiration.
She's 96 years old and still loving her job as a National Park Ranger. And she's a civil rights hero.
We should all be more like Betty.

So today is International Clash Day & I wrote about how Joe Strummer & The Clash have helped me get through the Trump era.
I found comfort in their music & words in 2016 when I realized the band deeply cared about left-wing politics & the human condition. Every morning I start out with The Clash; pumping my fist in the air & singing along with Joe's guttural voice is a much needed physical and mental release to the stresses in life.
This essay is special to me; I hope you enjoy it!
Yesterday was Holocaust Remembrance Day. My Eastern European Jewish family came to America 15-20 years before Hitler came into power, but it's not lost upon me that had they stayed, our family's future could have looked very different. They could have been fleeing Russia's anti-Jewish pogroms or famine or neither. I don't think I'll ever know.
I did not grow up Jewish. Our family's Jewish identity stopped with my great-grandmother Sophie. As I've aged and tried to connect wit...h and understand my family's past, I've grappled with frustration towards my great-grandmother, a woman I never met, for hiding our family's roots.
In a time when people are empowered to be who they are I have to remind myself that wasn't always the case. Hiding who you were meant survival, and even though Sophie was in a safe country I can't help but feel that fear had something to do with her decision.
I wrote a piece about how Gillian Anderson is the feminist Twitter hero we need right now & Birth. Movies. Death. was kind enough to share it.
Super stoked about this one.
I found a curious postcard of 15 hairy baseball players in my grandma's belongings.
I did some research on them, and come to find out they were part of a cult.
It's a super fascinating story.
Yesterday I was in a PetSmart outside of Boulder, CO, and saw this beautiful orange tabby up for adoption. Come to find out, she's from Houston and is an evacuee of Hurricane Harvey. What a fighter she must be! I'd love to find her family in TX, or if her family doesn't want her, I'd love to find her a new home! Look how sweet she is, and look at those weary eyes.

This one goes out to all the victims who can never come forward.
Are hot takes/think pieces productive?
Are they making the positive change they claim to want to make or are they creating echo chambers?
Are they helping people expand their minds or are they pitting people against one another?
