With travel restrictions still hampering tourism and movement between countries, online visits offer a way of experiencing that which you wouldn’t otherwise be able to enjoy. Even from abroad, you’ll be able to learn about what we do at HESC and see our cheetahs, rhinos and various other endangered animals. The UK and SA based social enterprise project, The Expedition Project, provides an opportunity to do online courses on wildlife conservation and rehabilitation in the South African context and a virtual visit to our Centre. And best of all, 100% of course profits come to us! Whether you’re a wildlife enthusiast or a veterinarian student, young or old, enroll, come and visit and support us in the work we do. Two of our beautiful female cheetahs keeping an eye on us from one of their favourite vantage points. The prominent mounds you see in their enclosures are called termitaria and are made by termites, not ants, as nests for termite colonies. There are over 15 known species of termites in South Africa. Termites are of great ecological importance because they play a vital role in breaking down dead and decaying plant material. As they tunnel, termites also aerate and improve the soil. Some people refer to termites as ‘flying ants’. Fact of the matter is that they are not even remotely related to ants and are evolutionary speaking, closer to cockroaches. Structurally they differ from ants in not having a ‘waist’ between the abdomen (hind body) and thorax (breast). They also have straight antennae (feelers) and not the knee-like bend antennae of ants. #endangeredspecies #hesc #30yearsofconservation #termites #cheetahs

Bokkie Bok, our little grey duiker, has given birth! Visitors to HESC will have seen the dainty little buck in her enclosure not far from the main gate and will now also be able to view her little one there. Born last week, the little fawn is equally small and dainty, but within a day was firm on its feet and suckled eagerly and greedily. With dad in the same enclosure, we predict the threesome will attract much attention. Follow this link for more gorgeous photo and videos: https://hesc.co.za/2019/11/bokkie-bok-2/
