On this day in 1303 the Battle of Roslin (the First War of Scottish Independence) took place. The battle was typical of combat in this era: a clash between relatively small groups of men-at-arms (armoured cavalry), not, as has been popularly written, a battle of manoeuvre involving many thousands. It is however thought that around 30,000 English were involved in the Battle (which is more than Robert the Bruce defeated at Bannockburn) and the result was a clear victory for the Scots.
