A comparison of the just-published Human Rights Watch Report on the cache of "Caesar" photos with the report prepared in January 2014 on behalf of Carter-Ruck indicates some remarkable discrepancies and raise some serious questions about the whole process of analysis of this cache of photographs. Guest post by Nicolas Boeglin, Professor of International Law, Law Faculty, University of Costa Rica (UCR) A few days ago, Prime Minister David Cameron appealed to Parliament Members to vote in favour of Royal Air Forces (RAF) air strikes against Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria, in order to "keep the British people safe" from the threat of terrorism. At the opening of a 10-hour Commons debate on December 2, the Prime Minister said the country had no other choice. [ 3633 more words. ]

Despite being of dubious legality, air strikes have begun against targets in Syria, with the support of Labour MPs acting against a resolution of their own party conference. On this page we'll keep a log of airstrikes. Here on HRI we logged 415 air strikes made against the town of Sirte in Libya in 2011 - an operation which involved providing air support to rebels who… [ 177 more words. ]

British Prime Minister David Cameron is attempting to persuade the UK parliament to support an extension of UK air strikes, ostensibly aimed at “degrading” ISIS, from Iraq to Syria. However, his argument that the action would have a clear legal basis is, despite the progressive undermining of international law by UK and US governments, denied by leading legal scholars. Dr Arman Sarvarian, a lecturer in public international law at the University of Surrey has… [ 617 more words. ]

The report of the Dutch Safety Board (DSB) was released today. Here is a video presentation from the DSB expalining the main findings: The findings are as expected by most serious investigators, with various scenarios as to who and why the BUK missile was fired still in play. As pointed out on this site, Ukraine has legal liability for failing to completely close down the air space above the conflict zone in Eastern Ukraine, especially as the airspace was closed to military flights. A parallel criminal investigation continues; although, given its make up, how thorough its report will be remains to be seen.

Question marks over @Amnesty 's research on Russian troops in #Ukraine http://wp.me/p1w0fz-419 @SalilShetty

Amnesty have published a few satellite images apparently showing armoured vehicles and artillery in an area in Eastern Ukraine and claim these prove the involvement of Russian troops in the country. However, the research Amnesty has published falls far short of proof, and in a matter of such importance, undermines the organisation's claim to provide impartial and unbiased research. And this surveillance often takes place in secret, with little or no oversight by the courts, by legislatures, or by the public.
