“You know it’s pretty rare for Jinju to get snow in the late March. Actually, this seems to be the first time I've ever seen snow later in the season over the last 30 years which brought me out for a walk. These days, I often see my friends and acquaintances to plan for a trip to any famous destination. When we were young, we were too busy with our jobs to travel; while, any time later will make it hard for us to walk on foot. That being said, this seems to be the best time to go on a trip."

"We started going out together since our first year in college. Then we broke up for a short time and that time of being alone made me realize how important she is to me which I wouldn’t have known if we’d kept on seeing together without a breakup. Anyhow, we’ve made it to marriage. As we majored in the same program, most of our mutual friends are the same college buddies. When they got the news of our marriage, half of them took it as a matter of fact; while the other half making a joke saying tongue in cheek that we’re still together after so many years.”

"It’s got much warmer; so I'm to go see Geoje. There’s no one to see over there or any particular memory of the place; but strangely enough I’d feel super good after seeing its sea not to mention having less pains in my aging physique. Btw, I’ve been told there’s a beautiful island on the way to Jeollado from here in Sacheon. Have you been there? I wish I’d visit there once; alas, my current physical condition doesn’t allow such a trip. Well, I’ve been living here in Jeondong-meon, Sacheon, since I was a kid. No wonder it’s a totally different world compared with today’s Sacheon. It used to be all the farm lands way up to Sacheon-up, the county seat. With all this rampant development, however, I don’t know where it is at all. I know we can’t do anything against the change itself as time gets on; but the problem is there’s no well thought-out planning in the current development boom. It's like development means no other than destruction of nature these days. I'm no expert or something but that's definitely not the way to go. Rather, I want them to proceed with the development plan looking far in the future not being preoccupied with the short term performance alone. My only wish is the natural environment should be left intact for the next generations to enjoy it as well."

"(He): I used to be a career truck driver which should have given me lots of stress without my knowledge. One day on the road, I felt my truck was abruptly swerving; so, I had to stop and checked it out. There was no problem with the truck itself; therefore, I was getting back on it. At that instant, it just occurred on me that it’s not the truck but my body which was out of shape. With that realization, I immediately called 911 and lay down. But when I woke up, I found myself in the hospital bed. To make a long story short, I’d had a stroke and lost consciousness. I was lucky enough to call 911 sooner than later; but I regret that I didn’t take care of the problem much earlier when I'd felt something’s wrong with me. If I had done that, my recovery would have been far better than it is now. To be honest, I’d never imagined I’d have such a catastrophe as I’d always been physically very active. I’m telling you that no one can see what will happen to him or her in the days ahead."

"(She): When I first got the news, I really couldn’t believe it suspecting it might be a dream. In fact, I’d felt that way on and off for the next several months. It’s that hard to accept the reality as it was. By the time he’s been hospitalized for up to a year, I wasn’t that devastated hoping he’d get well any time soon. But by the second year, it’s real hard to put up with any longer as I’d almost lost any glimpse of hope. Given that, he's got much improved. Back then he couldn’t even sit on a wheelchair let alone move about. You see now he can get out for a work out like today.”

“I had to leave my place where I was born and lived into my 20’s as it was submerged under the water with the construction of the Nam River Dam. Back then, my wife’s brother had run this rice mill; so I got relocated here.... There used to be lots of mills like this numbering over 200 in the Jinyang-gun county alone. Now I gather only 10 or so are still in business. No wonder given they make such a small amount of money. We get only 4.000 Won for working on this big a size of a bag. And we only get just few bags a day. Even if I got 10 bags, it’s no more than 40,000 Won. Probably this mill would only last until I retire.”

"In the beginning, I started off as an apprentice for someone I knew. Since then, I’ve been working on photogra...phy over the last half a century. Back then, there was no such thing as the photo retouching software. Seriously, we had to hand draw on the original film with a sharp pointed pencil after having the film varnished. If you’re good at it, then you could make your name as a top notch photo correction specialist. No wonder strobes were also ignited by the magnesium and powder mixture not like today’s dry cell one. In making the mixture, getting the right amount of the ingredients was the key as it determines the exposure. With the presence of the digital camera, it’s become a completely new world. So, after having mulled over what to do, I finally decided to learn the new technology. Then, I started adopting it in 1999 not to mention the retouch software. When it comes to computer, I even didn’t know how to log on at the time I first dabbled in it; luckily, I now know good enough to run my studio."

“I’d once taken a photo class at a life-long learning center to learn how to take portraits. But they’d only talked about landscape photos. Thinking of the best way to utilize what I’d learned, I’ve ...decided to take a picture of me being placed inside the landscape. You know what? I’ve found there’s a big difference depending on who’s in the same background or if it’s a man or woman. So, I’ve taken pictures of me clad in a woman’s clothes and the other way around. To be honest, the photos in a woman’s clothes look way better. Therefore, I often take pictures of me dressed up in women’s clothes as I only appear in a fuzzy silhouette in these pictures.”

“(HOJ): Would you have something to start anew if you ever went back to the time you started off the business at age 30?

“(He): Absolutely. I do have one unfinished business which I’m still working on. In the past, my business was doing extremely well helping me give my children the best education they needed. Now many of those regular customers who'd bought from me have reached to the old age hard to get around any longer. My dream is to build a rest place for those senior citizens. Or, I’d like to do my fair share in helping build a community where everybody lives nice and comfortably. You know there’s no meaning at all if I alone do well.”

“I’ve started this business to scrape any little money to support my young family. Back then I had no money to buy a decent stock; so I had to find any item that I could get my hands on. Then those under the sea foraging ladies near my place popped into my eyes; and soon I started selling their long-stemmed seaweed called wakame. Looking back on the time I first started off, I feel quite content with what I’m doing now even if the business is definitely not that good as before. But no biggie, I’m managing OK.”

Actually, I’m a fashion designer creating a modern fancy look inspired by the timeless Korean traditions like the Korean alphabet Hangul and formal dresses c...alled Hanbok. While in college, I studied broadcasting & entertainment and I believe my study and the fashion design go hand in hand as they’re both in the business of creating something new. For now, I just wanna dabble in as many diverse fields; that’s why I joined Discover Jinju.

"Regarding the turtle-shaped battleship Guhbooksun which played a pivotal role to repelling... the Japanese Navy during the late 16th century war, there’re pretty much records left behind not to mention a great deal of interest in the legendary warship. However, no one seems to be interested in where they were made; which I think can be attributed to the difficulty to find a historical record about it. To tell the truth, I’m sorta a history buff; indeed I've tried to locate the probable place by going over several old documents and surveying those would-be places by myself. After a long research, I’ve narrowed down one very plausible place right around here or a spot on the way to Sacheon to be exact. My assumption is based on a couple of facts. Or, the area is easy to find a century plus year old big and tall trees in the nearby Mt. Jiri coupled with an easy access to deep water which is hard to find anywhere else. You may wonder where the sea is in Jinju but there’s an old record saying that the tidewater occasionally came rushing up to Kangju; so, it’s never a farfetched idea. Anyway, l feel pretty bad that there aren’t many old records remaining in whatsoever fields. Only if we had those old historical records with us, we’d find it far easier to decide what to be kept intact and protected.”
