Was very disappointed that even though the ticket seller could see my husband in his wheelchair, did not tell us he wouldn't be able to get up to the platform. Once we were inside and I asked if they ...had a lift for him, I was told no, he would have to walk up the stairs. When I told them he couldn't walk, there was no apology nor offer of refund for his ticket.
I realize that this is a working facility, but they should be more up front that they can not accommodate disabled people.

The little sub that could, great part of history... I hope the yo-yo s that are tearing down the statues don't wreck the place

Very interesting exhibit, but I would also like to thank the staff for helping out a pregnant girl after fainting. And also thank the kind nurse and respiratory therapist for staying with me until the... paramedics got there, even though they may never see this. We are thankful for the very responsive staff and guests we happened to be in a tour group with. All is well and baby is just fine. :) I wish I could have gotten to hear the end of the story and see the coin and put our vote in for what happened to the Hunley! Thanks again to all. See More

In September I took a group of WWII vets who were really looking forward to the visit to see the Hunley. Unfortunately, we left the site feeling really disappointed. The only way to get to the Hunley ...forces you to walk up a dangerous set of metal stairs. These stairs are something I would never recommend a senior citizen to walk. It was also discouraging to find out that you could not clearly see the ship as the water is apparently only drained one day a week; when the tank is full the sunlight against the glass and the water makes it virtually impossible for you to see anything. The staff was knowledgeable, but more focused on trying to hurry these veterans along. Given the service of these men, I would have handled it differently. I would highly recommend you call before visiting to see if the water tank will be drained that day and I would not advise anyone to go who has trouble with walking and climbing stairs. See More

I love the article I read in National Geographic about the Hunley. They showed the position of the Sub, with respect to the Housatonic wreck. They even recovered a $20.00 gold Piece, " With the Bul...let dent " on it, that belonged to a corporal who was aboard the Hunley when it sunk the 2nd time. It had saved the soldiers life once in battle, and was given to him as a dowry from his fiancé. See More

My husband and I have visited The Hunley five times over a more than 10 year period. This past June we were amazed to see it right side up and almost clean for the first time. All of my GGGrandfathers... fought in the Civil War; two were from South Carolina and fought there. Seeing the Hunley feels like part of our family history. The new displays are fabulous! My grandsons got to sit in a replica of the submarine and we enjoyed viewing replicas of what the men who perished looked like. All the displays are amazing! Bravo to the scientists who are making this part of history come to life! See More

We visited the restoration facility on Sunday, July 19th. We LOVED every minute of the time we spent there. We knew before we went that we would not get to see the Hunley, in all her glory, on displ...ay. This is a working restoration!

We were allowed to ascend steps to the top of the tank where she is submerged. The water was pretty murky the day we were there and it was hard to get a good view BUT we anticipated that before we got there. My husband and I knew the story of the Hunley before we went but our son did not.

The tour guides are very knowledgeable and take the time to answer questions to the best of their ability. There are things that are still being discovered and they do not have the answer as to why the crew perished.

The displays they have kept our 9 year old son's attention. The staff took time to answer his questions as he walked from one exhibit to the next. We look forward to returning in the future when the Hunley restoration project is complete and she is put on display. If you are into history (especially the Civil War) or the miltiary this is a tour you should not miss.

It's OK. I'm a huge lover of the Hunley and even have a tattoo of it. My girlfriend took me to visit on my birthday and I was a little disappointed. The biggest disappointment was not really being abl...e to see it because of the platform and scaffolding. I wish they'd figure out a better option for viewing it more clearly. See More

Incredible exhibit and restoration project in the making. I would vote this exhibit high on anyone's list of places to visit in Charleston, SC. It has a wealth of information, civil war history, ...and also have very knowledgeable tour guides. Congrats!!!! See More

To be fair, The Friends of the Hunley does not have possession of the submarine. The Friends is merely a fund-raising organization. Without funds, the professional archeologists, conservators, and ot...her scientists who have labored for the past twelve years could not have been so employed. While it may be distasteful for them to "grandstand," they are fulfilling their mission to fund the conservation of the submarine, and because of those efforts, the sub and story will be told someday in a modern museum. Do not look for the Friends to be the arbiters of the final story on the Hunley. That will come from the professionals who will publish their findings when they are sure of them. Such science as they are doing does not go quickly, but they surely are doing an amazing job and don't care whether we interested onlookers are getting impatient for the truth. Relax and enjoy the ride. See More

What a humbling experience. Just the thought of what technology advancements we have had since the Civil War is astounding. It took the lives of 3 different crews, 5, 8 and 8. I am so glad they can tr...y and preserve this piece of history. See More

Conservator Anna Funke is ready to get to work in the Hunley conservation tank. But why is she dressed like that?
Conservators get a lot of questions about the protective gear they wear and why. Team safety is a top priority since there are chemicals and other hazards in their work. Here is a quick rundown of the required safety gear and other equipment needed when working on the sub:
-Head Lamp to help us see inside the submarine
-Hat to protect from falling debris
-Ear p...rotection to help block the noise of pneumatic chisels used for removing concretion
-A respirator to filter dust and particulates
-Harness for fall protection
-Tyvek suits keep us dry and protected from the chemical conservation solution residue.
-Yellow sleeves provide an additional layer of protection to our wrists and arms.
-Nitrile gloves as well as a thicker pair of shock absorbent gloves.
-They carry eye wash to clean eyes in case they come into contact chemical residue or other particulates
-Waterproof boots.
