IAMAT physicians have saved my life in foreign countries (Belize, India, Italy, and Vietnam ) four times over a period of thirty years. If you are a traveller, ...join IAMAT and PLEASE donate to this incredible organisation. Their information packets are invaluable and being able to fluently communicate with a doctor schooled in North American medical practices can save your life! See More

3 years ago this week, this organization saved my mother's life. She was traveling in Barcelona, Spain when she fell and had a hip and shoulder injury. Becaus...e of adverse reactions to medications that she was given, her condition quickly declined. Within a few days she was in intensive care having suffered from seizures and pneumonia caused by severe hyponatremia. My mother and father, traveling alone, were not able to communicate with her medical providers in Spain and received very little assistance from her insurance providers; including her costly supplemental policy for repatriation. Mostly because of the language barrier, the hyponatremia went un-noticed until a doctor with IAMAT intervened (Dr Mary D McCarthy). My father found her by desperately researching on google and finding IAMAT moments before her first seizure.

Please be aware that this 501c3 organization exists - especially when you travel outside the US, and support them if you can. Most of all, make yourself aware of the situations that you will likely face if you have a medical emergency while traveling outside of the US. Call your insurance company and ask them how to be prepared and be skeptical.

I've used their recommended doctors a few times in the past in SE Asia and East Africa. It's a huge relief to know where a quality doctor is when you need one!

Mary-Lina Kosicki- A doctor from IAMAT came to my hotel at 3 am and helped me get
transportation Florence by cab, as I was too sick to travel by train.. His voucher was propof enough for my travel insurance to pay not only for his services but for the long taxi ride.

Myth Of The Month: "I'll get sick from eating street food."

Not necessarily: Choose clean, busy vendors serving freshly cooked, steaming hot food. If a restaurant or vendor's stall looks dirty, assume poor hygiene practices and choose a different place to eat.
