The #ISurvivedEbola family is deeply saddened by the news that William Poopei - father, friend, Liberian, and a survivor of Ebola – has died. Despite surviving the worst epidemic of the 21st century, William succumbed to a curable condition due to lack of medical care. While much has been done to strengthen the health care systems of Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea, there is still so much work to do. We thank William for sharing his life with us in time of crisis, and our thoughts are with his two sons who remain. His commitment and passion for good will live on in the Ebola survival story he graciously shared to help save his nation.
In memory of his courageous work, we encourage you to view his poignant story: https://vimeo.com/113323185
"The ambulance is there for rescue and the ambulance driver, we're there to save lives." ~Abdul Richard Kamara, Ebola Survivor, Sierra Leone
Learn more from Abdul and his role as a first responder in this short video from the Road to Recovery series. These new films feature Sierra Leonean Ebola survivors talking about the current situation in their country.
Our thoughts are with Guinea this week. Let us remember that Communication, Protection, and Reintegration are key to staying Ebola Free —
The epidemic is over, but to remain #Ebola-free continued vigilance is necessary!
Communicate accurate information; protect yourself, your family and your community; reintegrate those who have survived.
We've survived #Ebola: As we welcome the new year, the #ISurvivedEbola campaign team is thankful and overjoyed that Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone have all official ended the Ebola epidemic.
We want to offer our deepest thanks to our partners at #TackleEbola, Vulcan Inc.., UNICEF, and especially all of the people that have shared their stories of surviving Ebola with this campaign. Your stories have helped us all to survive, to move past fear toward empathy and actions that ended an epidemic.
Since recovering from Ebola, Fatima Kamara has gotten married! She has also benefitted from additional health training, including learning how to respond to tuberculosis, and now works for the Kenema Government Hospital. Fatima has been an inspirational advocate for health workers across the region.
Since recovering from Ebola, Aminata Kargbo of Sierra Leone has worked as a case manager at Partners in Health, as well as studying for and passing her University entrance exam.
Since recovering from Ebola, Isatu Kanu has reopened her construction supplies stand and takes it upon herself to sensitize fellow traders in the marketplace. From early treatment to preventative measures, she promotes the practices that saved her life.
Pastor Vinton’s story of survival is a hard one to forget. After testing positive for Ebola, he fled — scared and confused — from the ETU! Luckily, his brother and fellow Pastors convinced him to return. Life has since returned much more to normal for Pastor Vinton, who can be spotted traveling across still waters in his canoe.
After recovering from Ebola, Zorbo immediately returned to duty by working within the ETC to support Ebola patients; he has since served as health promoter for Doctors Without Borders in Guinea and is also a trained laboratory assistant. Clearly, his engagement to #tackleebola has taken many forms!
Since recovering from Ebola, Facinet Bangoura of Guinea has been on the receiving end of stigma. His friends have since apologized for not providing him moral support when he needed it most and he has forgiven them. He has also contributed to the fight against Ebola by engaging in community-building efforts and has re-started his exercise routine!
Since recovering from Ebola, William Poopei has rebuilt his house and has been a wonderful father and role model for his children. They are back in school and doing extremely well. #throughsurvivorseyes
