February 27, 1908: "WHAT ABOUT THE INDEX SKULL?
THERE have been so many inquires concerning the history of the skull displayed in The Index window— whether Ind...ian or white man, who the owner was, whither he was traveling, what he was in search of and the cause of his death—that we have decided to offer four prizes for the best story answering these questions.
"Practically nothing is known about this headpiece, and of
course the story must necessarily be an imaginative one.
It was one of three unearthed by workmen while grading for the Short Line extension from Huntington along the Snake river, and was presented to this paper by "Deafy" Burlingham. It is in a good state of preservation and had laid in the ground probably not 20 years. . .
This man’s wehéyqt, looped necklace, would have been worn for ornamentation purposes. It is composed primarily of wampum (small disc shaped shells), which helpe...d signify a person’s wealth and status. The shells were collected from areas along the Pacific coast and traded inland among tribes. This looped necklace also features abalone and conch shell pendants and a beaded loop attached with evidence to suggest that ermine skin and red feathers were once attached.
