WW12-19-17 IAM 1584 Henkel Bay Point Strike For Health And Safety Wins Battle With Union Busters https://soundcloud.com/workweek-radio/ww12-19-17-iam-1584-henkel-bay-point-strike-for-health-safety-wins-battle WorkWeek Radio interviews a IAM 1584 operator Chris Fajardo at Henkel Engineering who is on strike for proper health and safety conditions and human rights on the job. Also interviewed is Andrea Gorman, Secretary-Treasurer of IAM local 1584. The workers were forced out on strike in Bay Point California on October 16, 2017 after demanding real health and safety protections on the job. After the death of a temporary worker 26-year-old David Eleidjian who was a former marine, the company which is owned by a German based multi-national was fined $200,00 by Cal-OSHA for the death but the serious health and safety conditions continued unabated. These workers make adhesives for plane companies like Boeing. The company was trying to break their strike by spending millions of dollars bringing in a company called Strom Engineering. This professional strike breaking company specialty is breaking strikes by bringing in scabs or replacement workers. They were involved in replacing 7500 mechanics when Northwest Airlines mechanics went on strike. That strike was broken by these tactics. The CEO of Henkel, Hans Van Bylen made $7,030,273.25 and the company is unionized throughout Europe. Unions in Europe including Henkel units urged the company to end it's strike breaking and protect the health and safety of the US workers at Bay Point. On December 19, 2017 the same day as this program the IAM 1584 workers voted to accept a new contract that provided real health and safety protections and increased benefits and conditions for the workers. Puerto Rico Unions Fight Privatization of Schools and Public Power Company
by Ken Nash and Mimi Rosenberg

Building Bridges: Your Community and Labor Report
National Edition
Produced by Ken Nash and Mimi Rosenberg
******************************************
Teacher and Utility Unions on the State of the Puerto Rican Labor
Movement After Maria and Governor Rossello's Plans to Privatize
the Public Power Company and Schools
with
Fredyson Martinez Estevez, Vice- President of the Irrigation & Electrical
Workers Union, Unión de Trabajadores de la Industria Eléctrica y Riego,
and
Mercedes Martínez Padilla, President of the Teachers' Federation of
Puerto Rico/Federación de Maestros de Puerto Rico

In Puerto Rico, hundreds of thousands of people are still reeling from the
destruction caused by Hurricane Maria. In a time of such dire need, the
Trump administration has failed to provide the support needed to restore
water to 7% of Puerto Rican residents and power to the nearly one in three
residents, paving the way for a catastrophic announcement. The decision to
privatize Puerto Ricoâs state-owned power company which follows the same
dangerous path mapped out in the Trump administrationâs draft infrastructure
plan.

Whether itâs water or energy, privatization helps Wall Street at the expense
of the well being and health of communities, particularly low-income families
and people of color. Trump's leaked infrastructure plan similarly provides a
blueprint for handing over public land and public water to Wall Street. It seeks
to privatize local water systems and other critical public services, prioritizing
limited federal dollars to Wall Street and corporate investors. This scheme
would also sell off federal assets and create a new infrastructure fund by
opening up federal lands and waters to mineral and energy development
benefiting the oil and gas industry.

Weâll speak with representatives of public sector unions in Puerto Rico
representing teachers and utility workers about Governor Rossello's plans
to privatize their services, and about challenges faced by the labor
movement and workers following hurricane Maria and theyâll discuss
labor issues affecting those unions under the Puerto Rico Oversight,
Management, and Economic Stability Act (PROMESA)

The crisis at KPFA and Pacific including the possibility of bankruptcy was the focus of a forum on 32/18/18 in Berkeley. The forum also looked at the history of efforts to make Pacifica and the stations into an NPR type operation.
Also presentations looked at the development of a multi-media platform using streaming video and the di...gitalization of the analogue channels at KPFA that could bring 2 additional stations for the use of KPFA and possible lease as a way of raising funding.
Finally the program reported on the effort at KPFA to manipulate an election to prevent any representation from the station on the PNB of representatives who would be opposed to the bankruptcy proposal being pushed by the CFO, Save KPFA and United For Community Radio UCR factions.
Speakers at the forum included:

Concrete Soldiers UK’ is a new documentary film by Nikita Woolfe, looking at an under-reported scandal in London and across the country — the social cleansing of council estates. Starved of funds by central government, councils and housing associations are entering into deals with private developers in which, instead of renovating estates, they are being demolished and rebuilt. The developers make huge profits, but existing tenants, and leaseholders are squeezed out, socially cleansed from their homes, and often from the boroughs in which they have lived for years, for decades, or for their whole lives.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Nikita Woolfe and the documentary narrator Andy Worthington.

There is no charge for admission but you must bring a bag of non-perishable food which will get donated to First Love Foundation (Tower Hamlets Food Bank).
