This month is National Human Trafficking Awareness Month, and a rece...nt event in Yellowstone National Park shows how taking action can help save those in need. Park officials describe how on September 28, 2019, Frank and Terry Dinovi were visiting Yellowstone after their summer as volunteer campground hosts in Glacier National Park. While staying in the Mammoth Campground, they were witness to apparent child abuse and neglect. Terry, a retired registered nurse, is trained to identify child abusers and abuse. They reported their observations to the nearest US Park Rangers. This week, on January 13, park superintendent Cam Sholly formally recognized the Dinovis with the Yellowstone Superintendent’s Commendation for their determination to report what they knew to be child abuse and neglect of six children. Due to their diligence, US Park Rangers began to collaborate with multiple agencies including the NPS Investigative Services Branch, Wyoming Department of Criminal Investigations (Fusion Center), Wyoming Department of Family Services, Arizona Department of Child Safety, and Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office in Arizona. The adults and children had traveled and stayed in campgrounds from Alaska to Arizona where the adults were ultimately apprehended and charged with felony child abuse, child endangerment, aggravated assault, and kidnapping. The six children were removed from the custody of the serial abusers who critically endangered the children. The National Park Service (NPS) takes comfort that these children are now safe because of the Dinovis' actions. We collaborate with other agencies across the country to combating human trafficking.
