"The UK is not a defeated power having just lost a war, like the Germans entering one-sided negotiations over the Treaty of Versailles a century ago. We have staged a democratic revolt by voting for Brexit. Now we have to repel the anti-democratic revolt of the EU and UK elites who refuse to accept that Leave means Leave – if necessary by walking out and leaving their deal on the table", writes Mick Hume.
Brendan O'Neill on the left's continuing exploitation of the Grenfell Tower inferno:
'These people have no interest in hearing the voice of the poor. They want to speak through the poor. "Give a voice to the voiceless", says one headline on the Grenfell inferno. This is political ventriloquism, of the most ghoulish variety, where the dead poor are made into political placards to push the messages of a middle-class left. After Brexit, much of the left in essence said: "Silence the voice of these low-information people." Now, after Grenfell, they say: "Let's speak up for these poor people." This gives us an alarming insight into the mind of the modern left: it prefers the poor when they are screaming for their lives rather than when they’re calmly demanding radical political change.'
"Though there is a big fight ahead, progressives and democrats should take heart. Brexit has always meant more than leaving the European Union. That vote gave voice to a public desire for autonomy, and a refusal to be dictated to by those who claim to be our betters. As we defend Brexit, we defend that Brexit spirit: the spirit that has rejuvenated politics, that has turned Question Time from a dowdy talking shop into a weekly public trial of politicians, that has forced an aloof establishment to take notice, and which has rocked elites not just here but around the world. However hard the elites try, they can’t rewrite history. The Brexit revolt happened, and that can never be undone", writes Tom Slater.
'There is everything to fight for in these times of political uncertainty. The instability of all the old parties and widespread demand for change highlighted by the election results provide opportunities for advancing different arguments. The first of which must be the resolute defence of democracy through Brexit.'

Watch spiked's Tom Slater discuss May, Corbyn and the future of Brexit on Sky News.

'Those of us who believe in democracy face a very, very serious situation. Yes, the election results had many positives, not least the drubbing of hubristic Sturgeon and the rejection by many of May’s "I know best" attitude to Brexit. Such technocrats will not be widely or casually tolerated by the people, and that’s good. But the forces of anti-democracy are circling. They spy in the weak hung parliament and the rise of Soft Brexit Corbynism an opportunity to weaken the mass democratic mandate of last June. Ignore those who say we're witnessing a return to two-party politics - the stakes are far higher and far more fascinating than that. The battle for a more democratic public life must now begin in earnest.'
"We must go to the polls today to defend Brexit. But the fight begins again tomorrow. Whatever government we wake up to, it is our duty to insist it upholds the people’s will. And it is our duty to think, to argue, to discuss and to carve out the new politics we need to meet the radical, risk-taking spirit of post-referendum Britain. In this election, the parties have proved themselves incapable of meeting the public thirst for something new. Now it’s down to us. The people."

"The Conservative campaign has shown that, Brexit aside, they remain as distant as ever from ordinary people. Among Labour voters I speak to, Jeremy Corbyn is unpopular and they trust Theresa May far more to deliver on Brexit. But the Tories have been incapable of capitalising on this. When Conservative and Labour voters in Birmingham head to the polls on Thursday, they’ll be holding their noses for different reasons. Birmingham deserves better", writes Ieuan Joy.
"13.48 – Celebrated European values by having a langoustine lunch with my therapist. It’s such a burden having to lead the charge against Brexit. I explained that, in many ways, I identify as a Jesus figure. My therapist pointed out how absurd that was – unlike me, Jesus meekly accepted defeat."

'That the Lib Dems think they can retake south-west Leave seats like Wells reflects either self-delusion or a belief that disaffected Leavers won’t turn out thi...s time around. But maybe there’s something to that. Having a smoke on a bench on Glastonbury High Street, Paul, who is retired, told me: ‘I voted for the first time to Leave the EU, but doubt I’ll vote again.’ Why? ‘Because all those politicians don’t understand what we meant by it.’
