Officer Pat Ryan: About noon on Wednesday, 2/9/17, near Barranca and Lake, a City of Irvine motorcycle officer with red and blue lights flashing, followed a BMW... driven by a visibly shaken young woman until she parked right next to my van. Since it was a warm day, I was fortunate enough to have my windows rolled down, so I was front row, center, for the drama as it unfolded; missing only a small portion at the beginning due to a phone call.

While on the phone, I still heard enough to learn that she was a lawyer, and that she had been texting or reading a text message while driving, which she tried to deny when confronted by the officer. Wrong answer!

Having had a personal experience in my youth attempting to convince an officer that he was falsely accusing me, I'm pretty sure there's no way to make that argument fly. Although officer Ryan's demeanor was much less intense than the officer's I remember from long ago, the wisdom he spoke in the next few minutes put a lump in my throat, and led her to genuine repentance; complete with real tears and snot. Think about it! Making a lawyer cry by reasoning with them is no small accomplishment! I didn't think that was possible.

It could be said that beautiful young women usually luck out by not getting tickets, but that wouldn't have been justice in this case. Officer Ryan told her about the worst part of his job - informing a father that his precious daughter was flown to a trauma center or worse. (Being the father of a beautiful daughter about the same age as her, a little fear of that phone call lives somewhere in the back of my mind.) Or just as life changing, she could have caused someone else to have taken that flight, all because of the distraction of a text message.

In the end he told her that he would probably let her off this time with a warning. Then on second thought he said no, as he began to write. As he handed her the ticket he told her she could rip it up right then and not have to think about it again. But if she was a person of character, he wanted her to promise to pay it forward. In the next 2 weeks she needed to tell her family and others about this day; buy coffee for someone in line behind her etc. And I believe in some way a changed young lady humbly promised to do that.

I'm becoming a cynical old man in a lot of ways. Although every word spoken seemed authentic and spontaneous, maybe what I heard was practiced and memorized the way an actor does things. If that was the case, I know that a lawyer and I were treated to a performance straight from the heart of a great cop.

Just saw a super cool thing done by the Irvine Police Department! There was a traffic accident on culver and walnut that we saw while going to Trader Joe's. Luc...kily it looked like no one was hurt. One of the cars had a young kid with his family and looked very shaken up. When we were leaving the store they were still cleaning up the accident and we saw the family on the sidewalk and an officer was talking to the little boy. Just then another officer came up with a cake for him! He was so excited! I don't know if it was his birthday or you guys just did it to cheer him up, but you made a really scary thing have a happy ending for that kid! Very very kind of the officers! Way to go IPD! You guys are 5 stars in my book. See More

I've been living in Irvine for several years and had quite a few encounters with IPD. All the interactions were professional, courteous, and helpful.

The most ...serious incident was when I crashed and embedded my motorcycle into a car. Several IPD cruisers showed up within two minutes to check if everyone was okay. Then they immediately went to work clearing the road. Three officers picked up the corner of the car while the other three pried my bike away. They even used their batons as crowbars to get more leverage. After several minutes of a somewhat comical scene, they succeeded. The officers were very helpful and were just happy to see that i wasn't injured seriously. They went above and beyond what was necessary.

The second incident was just last Friday night when a fist fight broke out at the Marketplace and I helped break it up. IPD showed up within minutes and helped administer first aid to the injured person. They took detailed reports from multiple witnesses and looked at cell phone video evidence. They got medical and mental health help for the guy that was clearly having a psychotic episode. They also made sure everyone else was okay and felt safe.

The third incident was when a package got stolen from my front door. I called to just place a phone report in and they ended up dispatching an officer over. The officer showed up like within two minutes to do a police report in the middle of the night. Yeah, all that for just a stolen package. He took detailed notes, asked good questions, and gave me a case number. He reassured me that they've been investigating several cases of package theft and have been making arrests. He also recommended ways of reducing the chance of package theft.

The final encounter was with IPD Animal Services. I had a pet go missing and they did everything they could to put an alert out. I also coincidently met the supervisor of Animal Services Kimberly during a firearm training class and I got to chat with her all day. She was super friendly and genuinely cared about animals and protecting the people of Irvine. I could see she was passionate about serving Irvine.

So overall, all my encounters with IPD have been positive and reaffirms their professionalism. Thank you for keeping Irvine safe!

The officer who filed my report on my stolen 2014 ford focus was extremely professional and courteous.

But my problem is that on Tuesday May 16th I misplaced m...y car while having car trouble as you know there are many many parks in that area I immediately began calling your department and did so daily to check if it had been towed or if there was any way you could help me find it and I was told it was a needle in a haystack and there was nothing that could be done. Long story short almost a week later I cake across the park I had in fact parked at after having minor car trouble, and it was gone.

I called the department daily, notified the city, notified parls and Recreations as well as contacting all tow yards and im pounds.

A car should not be stolen for any action to be taken on behalf of the Irvine P.D. and frankly I am quite disappointed.

Just wanted to give a big shout-out to the dispatcher that answered my phone call on Tuesday about being hit by a car at the Market Place. Pretty sad that you... couldn't pull your head out of your ass to figure out what city I was in and then you just gave up on me. So glad I don't live in Irvine or will ever need the Irvine Police Department because you just like every other police department in Southern California...LAZY when it comes to defending the residents and visitors of your city. Great resurrects at the market place but People beware Irvine PD sits in the parking lot at the market place and watches for late night customers leaving Lazy Dog and BJ,s restaurants so don't drink if you visit either of these place there looking to get your $ its a big business DUI's.

I want to say thank you to the Irvine Crossing Guard named Dick who is the crossing guard at Alderwood Elementary. He's a fantastic crossing guard, and brings p...ersonality, love, compassion, and safety to our whole community. He hasn't been there the past couple of days, and all of the students, and parents already miss him. Get back to work soon Dick, because we all miss you! See More

I had an experience that required the assistance of IPD. We had just installed a video doorbell in the afternoon. I went to bed as usual. About 3;00 in the, I and the animals heard a noise. The system notified me of movement on the front porch. I immediately called 911, and 2 IPD officers were out to the house within 2-3 minutes. The officers spoke with me, drove around the neighborhood, and advised me what they had found, and that everything was clear. The officers were extremely professional as well as reassuring to me. I know, thanks to the great police department we have in Irvine, this city remains one of the safest in the country! See More

These guys have a hard job and they do it at the highest of levels. If there is a finer police department in California, I have yet to see them. Keep up the great work, Irvine is a special place and you keep it that way

Very disappointed tonight. About an hour ago, I went to my apartment rental office to notify them that someone had left a puppy in a car. The office staff tried... to figure out who the car belonged to with no luck.
The police were called and an officer came out. Not exactly sure why, but the puppy is still locked in the car and nothing was done.
Are you kidding me??????

Back in 1971, El Toro was a thriving Marine Base. I was one of the fortunate ones to be stationed there. My wife and I came here as newlyweds and lived here my discharge in 1974. Now, 45 years later we are revisiting the places where our marriage had its start. Driving only on memories while trying to locate my old hangar at the base, a police vehicle pulls up beside me. At first I was leary, but asked if I could get out and talk to her. She agreed and as I was explaining my circumstances, she immediately offered to escort us onto the runway and try to find the hangar where I had worked. Officer Christina was very professional, informed, helpful and considerate. We asked her where we should go eat and she told us about your incredible Irvine Spectrum Center. In the South, we'd call that a home run.
Our thanks goes out to Officer Christina and the wisdom of the Irvine Police Department to hire her. Thanks from Alabama for keeping us safe.

I've never been so relieved to get a ticket. As a struggling mother of two I have had to rob Peter to pay Paul lately. Just before the holidays the bills get tight. I let my registration lapse hoping I will earn a decent Christmas bonus to pay it. I was pulled over and ticketed. I was treated with the utmost respect by Officer Salazar. He saw that I was frazzled and scared. He was kind and empathetic. Thank you for your kindness in a stressful situation. God Bless you. See More

Really want to know why there were dozen or more undercover cops in my Woodbury neighborhood for hours and hours yesterday. As a concerned citizen I feel we have the right to know what is going on our block...

My husband and I broke down on the 241 before chapman in Santiago canyon while on his motorcycle. We were stranded for 2 hrs waiting for a tow and our phone die...d. No one offered help, no one stopped. I even saw a CHP and he drove by. Well let me tell you one of your code enforcement or officer (I didn't really notice if it was a cop or code) pulling an Irvine Police trailer saw us he drove past us. It look like he was braking to slow down. I thought oh he passed us he's not going to turn all the way around and come back. Well he did. He was so nice asked if we were ok and brought us water. I just want you to know we appreciated it. I wanted to post to your Facebook but I couldn't. I know the police sometimes get a bad rap so I just want you to know how great your employee is. I work for another City and I know the importance of great service so I appreciate it. Thank you and God Bless all of you. See More

I was stopped this morning around 3:30am by Officer Jones in the Woodbridge/Oak Creek area. No one "likes" getting pulled over by the police; I doubt officers e...njoy it either. Officer Jones was extremely professional, courteous, quick to advise me what to correct to avoid being pulled over again, and get me on way. I hope my actions of stopping in a safe open area, turning off my truck, keeping my hands in plain view, and having my license ready helped to ease the situation. I realize that every traffic stop officers make is like walking into a snake pit; any stop could potentially be dangerous. It's a dangerous job that I would never want. There's a reason that Irvine is such a safe place; officers like Officer Jones play big part in it. See More

I was profiled and pulled over today for my vehicle looking like the typical street racer type(my car is lowered, wheels, ect.). After I was 100% honest with th...e officer and he inspected my car (which is 100% carb legal) we had a short conversation and agreed on several issues that are going on in the community, which need to be addressed. He was extremely respectful to me and very well educated on emissions and vehicle codes. I have had issues with other department leos that were very uneducated and bias on basic laws/facts. This was definitely the best experience I have ever had with any department. Thank you officer Bergstrom for your professional attitude, respect, mutual understanding, and keeping the community safe. Warmer, drier weather means taking extra care in protecting the City of Irvine Open Space Preserve from the threat of wildfire. On Saturday, June 24, the City’s open space partner Irvine Ranch Conservancy will stage a mock deployment of their Fire Watch Volunteer program. You may see volunteers stationed at Bommer Canyon and Quail Hill trailheads, and along Laguna Canyon Road south of the 405 freeway during this practice exercise, helping us all be better prepared for wildfire prevention. For more information on the Fire Watch Volunteer program, visit #SafeSummer

Due to the Santa Ana winds, it is critical for land managers, homeowners associations and people living near wildlands to join the community fire watch!
