Doing your taxes today? Did you know in 1942, Irving Berlin wrote ‘I Paid My Income Tax Today’ for The U.S. Department of the Treasury to prompt the American public to pay their taxes in the midst of World War II?

Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau’s appreciation of the song was expressed in a letter to Berlin: “It wasn’t an easy assignment to make people sing about taxes, but you have done it beautifully, and you have also hit the nail on the head as far as the Treasury policy is concerned. I know that the song will do the country a great deal of good.”
