Both of the Cross sisters think Ben Swift is a great catch, but do they realize the impact he will have on their lives? A coming-of-age story of tumultuous first love, bitter rivalry and much, much more: https://t.co/iC9YCQ7eO5
We’ve come a long way and I’m grateful for the early women writers who helped us get here. #equality
Jennifer Kelland Perry, Author is feeling awesome.
When I wrote my first book, it never occurred to me it might be chosen for a school assignment one day. I've learned that students at a school here in Newfoundland are doing Independent Novel Studies, and a Grade 11 girl chose Calmer Girls!
She will be doing a Literature Fair project on it as well. I hope to get pics of her project after its completion in March. Stay tuned!

It's a cold and snowy day here at home, but this warms me down to my toes. I'm thrilled to see another powerful 5-star review on Amazon for Calmer Secrets! ![]()
"Calmer Secrets is a fascinating and mature, well-written second look into the lives of the Cross girls which takes place some four or five years after the events of the first book. The time gap and the substantial content in each novel support Jennifer Perry's decision to split this story into two books.
Samantha is al...l grown up, Ben is gone, and against her self-centred, irritating sister's advice she tumbles into a relationship with old friend Kalen - who has turned into a hot rocker. Their mother continues to wrestle with her issues, and the charming Henry, Veronica's four-year old boy, is Samantha's darling. The scene is set for a gritty, realistically told and engrossing unravelling of events, and old secrets, which will change everyone's lives.
The gripping story kept me helplessly reading on, late into the night. Hints are dropped, with a thud, or a tickle of the mind, and I yelled at Samantha not to be such a fool, at Ronnie for her attitude, at Kalen, at Ben, at Darlene, at Cash... the only one I didn't yell at was little Henry.
*Much* is explained as the final secrets are revealed and the ends of the story are resolved, and one begins to understand the complexity and depth of these beautifully crafted characters.
This is an excellent novel of family, love, and the damage that secrets can do. Highly recommended, but you have to read the first book first. Together, they make an epic story of ordinary life."

"This book was a very welcome sequel to "Calmer Girls." The writing is free of pretence and cliches, alive with subtle humour and delightful sparks of regional dialect, and makes for an effortless and pleasant read. The author's style has matured together with her characters. While the conclusion of this mini-series offers the prospect of happiness, it is complex and open-ended enough to be true to life."

feeling sad.
Paul and I were heartbroken when we heard Afterwords was closing. We loved going there so much, I wrote it into Calmer Girls as the place Samantha and Ben meet for the first time.
This article makes some good points and is worth the read.
For a lot of folks in St. John’s and for visiting bookworms like ourselves, downtown will never be the same.
💔
Just like all of you, we are troubled by the news of Afterwords' pending closure. David and Catherine and all the crew have provided this city with an amazing s...ervice and resource for many years. When Matt first moved to town in 2004 he stumbled upon that wonderful space filled with more books than he had ever seen. Most of his own collection came from Afterwords. While they were a top-notch bookshop, Afterwords did so much more for their community. They hosted readings and musical performances; they were political activists; they changed money for pan-handlers; and they provided a warm space downtown that anyone could enjoy free of charge, without fear of judgement.
We could be sad about losing Afterwords, but perhaps we can be angry. We can be angry that we have greedy landlords. We can be angry that we live in a city that has $700k+ for a rental hockey team, but not $5k for small business tax relief. We can be angry that we live in a province that taxes books whilst handing out $800k to Rolls Royce. We can be angry that the same province spends billions on a hydro project that blindly lines the pockets of the rich while making it harder for everyday people to heat their homes and businesses. But in that anger we can find the energy to make our city and our province a better place. St. John's can be what we want it to be, we just have to work to make it happen. Read on, friends. Read on.
