"Business Around the 'Burg" feature: For Katharine Corgan and her husband Vito Pellerito--owners of Vito's Italian Kitchen, Corgans’ Publick House and Vito’s Pi...zza Pie--checking out the food scene while exploring new cities offers fresh ideas and insights on the latest trends in food presentation and menu items. “We were running Vito’s Italian Kitchen--our first restaurant--based on serving good food with good service, but we felt unprepared when it came to finances and accounting. JMU’s MBA program helped me create formal business plans, gave me the confidence to approach investors, and helped us look at our businesses from a different angle. Our passions are food and people, but the MBA helped me realize that without also focusing on the numbers and business side of that, you can't be successful.” --Katharine Corgan, ’06 (english, minor: italian), MBA ’11

"Business Around the 'Burg" feature: Melissa Allen, JMU MBA ’13, and her husband Aaron dreamed of starting a business they were passionate about, that also woul...d bring people together. They launched Seven Arrows Brewery on New Year’s Eve 2014. “My MBA courses at JMU helped me to see businesses in a different light—to be more prepared to start the business and to look long term at what I wanted to accomplish in the next five years. It also helped me to think outside the box with regards to marketing, which is key in the beer industry. My advice to budding entrepreneurs? Follow your dream and be passionate about it. Find good mentors to help you brainstorm. You don’t have to do everything by yourself.” —Melissa Allen, MBA ’13
