- Bare with me this is gonna be a long one, but I need to get this out...! Last night as I watched TV and saw all the "protests" and flag burning and "I don't feel Safe" comments I thought about our young people today and felt very sad! In the sixties we had a young peoples revolution against the establishment and authority it wasn't always peaceful or respectable either. But it was almost a right of passage to adulthood! As I watched the protesters and their comments I was struck by how shallow they were and sometimes profane! So let me give you some advice, even if you don't want it (you can stop reading now). Life is not to be lived in a "safe" place! Being an adult is hard, terrifying and full of failures! You DO NOT ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANT! Living in a country where you can rail against the establishment is a far better place than most other places in the world! As a High School teacher for 20 years I would tell my students, If you want to be an agent of change then refine your message, make it say something that will make people take you seriously! Screaming "F" this or that is neither productive or a way to start a serious argument for change. Burning the flag is, I know exercising your right to free speech! But what are you saying? People who want to kill ALL Americans are burning the flag! Like it or not you are an American or living in America enjoying all the rights and privileges of living here. Whether you think they are "good" or "evil" you choose to be here! As for someone who wants to understand your grievances you loose me with your symbolism! As you move from college to this thing we call adulting you better get ready for some hard, scary and unfair things to happen to you, that burning the flag or "F" bombs will never fix! Learn the skills of diplomacy, self advocacy and cooperation. Having said all that remember you will still lose some of the battles! Good Luck! See More
