I saw Lenny’s story on the Channel 12 news this morning. Like me, he needs a kidney, blood type O. He’s from the Milwaukee area. You know how my transplant last summer changed my life. Can you share your spare?

I wanted to share an update. The new kidney eight months old and it’s working great! It’s doing everything it should and some things like electrolyte management a little too well. If I have to take phosphorus and magnesium tablets the rest of my life I’m fine with that.

The only problem since I last wrote has been a virus called Cytomegalovirus or CMV that landed me in the hospital. I was in for two weeks and a month of daily IV treatment followed by a few weeks of recovery and follow-up. I’m hoping that that’s the end of the end of the kidney related medical issues and now that spring is here we can get on with enjoying the rest of 2018!

Until I’d read this I had not considered the behind-the-scenes and logistics of organ transplants. How did my kidney get from Missouri to Milwaukee? Unsung heroes that I may never know, but they know that every time they do this it makes a difference.

There are so many unseen heroes that make organ, tissue and eye donation -- that make saving and healing lives possible. You too can be a hero just by saying yes. Please register as an organ, tissue and eye donor at Start your year off right.

I am a registered organ donor both online and with the DMV. And I’m here, happy and healthier because someone else made that same choice.

This Friday on my day off I started by going back to DaVita in Brookfield. Kidney disease and dialysis never get a day off and this Friday is like any other Friday. It’s also exactly four years ago since I started dialysis treatment at this facility. I’ll always remember Carrie, Julie, Erica and the others that helped me get started. It was good visiting my friends Teri, Linda and Shirley there and seeing John, Dan, Dave and others. Having visitors on dialysis was a highlight, it always made the time go by quickly. I wanted to give them a little of my time and for those on transplant lists, hope that their name will be called soon.

Caregivers make life possible for those that are ill or recovering from an illness. My caregiver, my love, my wife Terri has been with me every step of this journey.

It’s mid-October and now I’m three months, exactly 120 days post-transplant and everything is going great! I feel good, zero pain, surgical recovery is complete and I’m back to work. Froedtert is still monitoring me closely with labs twice a week, tweaking medications and tracking the results. In life things can go really bad or really good but usually somewhere in between. Right now we’re definitely in the real good portion.

All of these amazing changes coming from that one day from that amazing gift. Consider being a liver or kidney donor whether living or deceased. You will save a life and make an incredible difference in this world.

So many of my friends were on dialysis yesterday waiting for a kidney. Today will be a day of recovery as will Sunday. By Monday they will be 10 pounds heavier and looking forward to treatment. At least that's how I used to feel...
