I hope you can join us!
Thanks for the great picture Cynthia Woods!
Facebook still doesn’t seem to share mentions on my page...so here it is! Looking forward to next Tuesday, March 6th!
I joined the Youth Chorale for the first time this past Saturday and they sound fantastic!
On March 6 at 8PM, Prep faculty member Jennifer Sgroe will be performing the soprano solo from Poulenc's Gloria with Youth Chorale and Youth Repertory Orchestra.... We took some time to chat with her about the upcoming performance!
What are you most looking forward to with performing this piece?
"There really is nothing like Poulenc’s Gloria! When I first heard this piece, I was the same age as many of our Youth Chorale and YRO members. I performed in the chorus as a part of the New York State Summer School for the Arts School of Choral Studies. I can remember being blown away by Poulenc’s harmonic language. It is so striking and I fell in love with his music immediately and this love continues today - I’m currently working on many other Poulenc pieces at the moment. The harmony juxtaposed with the strong contrasting dissonance and the beauty of the orchestration and vocal writing are amazing and offer a completely unique view of the spirituality in the text and the Gloria. I am most looking forward to sharing in the music-making of this incredible piece with our NEC Prep musicians - it is a masterwork and I’m so happy that they have the opportunity to experience it! And of course this is one of the most beautiful soprano solos in the repertoire!"
Do you have a favorite moment in the Gloria? What about that moment in the piece stands out for you?
"In the final movement, Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, after the boisterous opening of orchestra and chorus, Poulenc repeats the the text from a completely different view, marked “Extraordinarily calm”, the chorus sings much more softly and the soprano line soars above supported by a beautiful wind and string texture on the words “Tu solus altissimus” which translates to “You alone are the most high”…it’s a transcendent way to end the piece - elevated and in awe."
Wishing you a Happy Holiday Season! I'll be singing the Soprano Solos for Handel's Messiah this Sunday, 12/17/17 and hope you may be able to join! http://mailchi.mp/…/happy-holidays-handels-messiah-december…
