Being raised in Kansas City, it was a sad day when I realized that NYC could NOT live up to the BBQ of my youth. That is, until I discovered John Brown Smokehouse! It's always delicious. The sauce is ...just right. The burnt ends are everything. The Boulevard Brewery on tap is the perfect touch to wash it down. Love the food here but there are problems. Problem 1 is that if you get here late, you’ll be waiting to grab a table. The place is small and it gets full easily. I guess that’s because their bbq is gr...eat. Another problem (#2) is that the best items seem to run out. I guess that’s because there’s only so many burnt ends per brisket, and they’re cooking fresh everyday, with no leftovers by the end of the night. So get here earlier the next time and get your burnt ends or delicious cornbread or whatever sold out previously! Problem #3 is that it doesn’t really have waiter service. You place your order at the register, grab a table and wait for your name to be called. Then you go back near the register and pick up your tray/trays of food. Since the entire staff is so friendly and does a great job cleaning after you, you might forget to leave a tip, so don’t forget! There’s a tip jar at the register. Problem #4 is that the food is so good that you may get more than you should and probably wind up taking home a “doggie bag.” I guess that’s not really a problem because even cold, the Mac & Cheese is delicious, if you have any leftover.
Great, moist, juicy barbecue that doesn’t need sauces for great taste, but they have fantastic sauces anyway.

On vacation from England and this place came highly recommended. Not only is the food awesome, the staff are lovely and there's an amazing bar in the back. The best BBQ I've had in NY this far, with that said, this was Kansas City style, so if you want to take issue with KC style, go elsewhere. The burnt ends, pastrami and sides were the best I've had ...outside of KC or Katz (and I know Katz isn't BBQ), but they still do the best pastrami.

Greens and Mac and cheese were nearly flawless and the beer selection was excellent. Huge fan!

First time to be here and I liked it. Unfortunately, they run out of ribs and that stinks! I was disappointed but then I tried other things in the menu and it was very good! Fast service which was great!

Never a bad meal. Mac-n-cheese is a must have regardless. Been coming here before they moved to 44th. Josh is still keeping with tradition and making the best smoked BBQ in the city.

Having been to KC and sampled the BBQ there, this is just as authentic!! I have been coming here for years and never had a bad meal. If you're a Chiefs fan, this place is a must on Sundays!

Best cornbread you will have in your lifetime. Great beer selection, all meats are very good (ribs and burnt ends are usually amazing (but sometimes the ribs are a little dry)) and friendly staff. Ver...y relaxed atmosphere. See More

The atmosphere reminds me of every great hole-in-the-wall BBQ joint I have ever loved. But with a badass Bengali auntie clearing up and freely distributing genuinely loving and irresistibly contagious... smiles without judgement... No matter how much meat and beer we shoved in our greedy freaking faces.

Josh Bowen is a meatgician. The pastrami was some of the best I've had, the ribs were perfectly cooked (tender but still clinging to the bone), and the turkey elevated an animal that I'm usually only excited about once a year to something I want every day.

BBQ is not prepped to order and sometimes things can dry out a bit. The lean brisket and sausage were casualties of long hold, but the flavors were still good and the burnt ends were au pointe, more than making up ground. Porkbelly was fresh and juicy too. The ultimate litmus test for BBQ, though, is the pulled pork.

Often pulled ahead and sandbagged for service, this was a full lump of intact shoulder. No bear claws or knives to be seen.

The slaw has changed how I view cabbage.

This is not competition or production barbecue. It is low and slow, painstakingly, lovingly made magic.

The only really good barbecue I've had in the new York city area. The menu is up on the blackboard, the servers are ready to take your order. The food was great as were the beer/beverage choices. G...racious, down to earth. No frills, just delicious barbecue. My only complaint. Food temperature could have been a little hotter. Everything else was well worth the trip. See More

The Burnt ends were the best things I have ever eaten. We are still talking about them today. Can't wait to go back and eat my face off again. Highly recommended.
