I'd like to congratulate Andrew Galloway for keeping Electro-Fi Records afloat and thriving through troubled waters. Electro-Fi has provided recordings of a long list of blues musicians, from veterans to up-and-comers, who might not otherwise have had the opportunity to record. Andrew and Electro-Fi have been invaluable contributors to Canada's music scene, and as one of those who has benefited from Andrew's help and friendship for ten of those years, I'd like to say thank yo...u. I look forward to our next CD together (we start in February).

As part of this weekend's Blues Summit, Electro-Fi Records will be presenting a 20th Anniversary Celebration showcase of some of its artists on Saturday, January 21st. The event will take place in the Adelaide Room of the Mariott Hotel at 525 Bay Street in downtown Toronto (near the Eaton Centre). Among the performers are Brooke Blackburn at 4:30pm, me (Julian Fauth) at 5:15pm and Shakura Saida at 6pm. Come on out and help us celebrate!

DECEMBER 19 2016: I’d like to send my condolences to the family and friends of two great musicians. John Mays of Fathead and Brian Cober of the Nationals. I’ve had the good fortune to hear John Mays live with his bandmates several times and occasionally to play with him, once at Mariposa and the last time at a blues and gospel concert organized by Lance Anderson a few years ago. He had a powerful voice and an infectious good humour. I’d also like to acknowledge th...e life of my friend Brian Cober, whose unique double-slide technique greatly increased the versatility of slide playing. I first met him in Kensington Market in the late 1990s and heard him often at what was then Café Kim, as well as at Grossman’s Tavern with the Nationals (Bill Hedefine and the late Paul McNamara). I remember sitting on the floor of his room with several friends listening to records, hanging out at Robert’s place in the Market, jamming on Blind Willie McTell and Memphis Slim tunes at Lola and sitting with him and Dianna on the patio of Axis when they dropped in for brunch. The last time I got to jam with him was not long ago at Grossman’s. He was a humble and good-hearted guy with a pure love of music. Thank you, and farewell.

I’d like to wish everyone a very happy holiday season and all the best for 2017. Please note that Axis will be closed for Christmas (Sunday December 25th, 2016) and on New Year’s Day (Sunday January 1st 2017).

I will be performing there on Friday December 30th at 9:30 pm with one incarnation of Dave McManus’ Junction City all-stars and for New Year’s Eve brunch on Saturday December 31st 2016.

The normal schedule will resume on Saturday January 7th, 2017 and special show & gig announcements will be added here and to my website, so please check back often.

Upcoming stuff to share:

ABSENCE ALERT I will not be at my usual Gate 403 gig on Wednesday, August 31. Instead, you will be treated to the dulcimer tones of the great Richard Whiteman. I'll be back the following week.

DAVE McMANIA On Saturday, September 10, I will join the Mayor of the Junction, Dave McManus, and an assorted cast of fine musicians, including Bob McNiven and Howard Willett, at the Cat (3513 Dundas West). We're celebrating Dave's impending liberation from wage servitude. I won't be at my monthly gig with Ken Yoshioka & Donné Roberts at Gate 403 that night, but Mark Stafford will be.

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 16 AT THE ROM On Friday, September 16, from 5 pm to 7:30 pm, I'll be playing in the C5 Lounge at the Royal Ontario Museum. Given that I play music rooted in the 1920s and '30s, it seems entirely appropriate to play in a museum. If you'd like to make a day of it, why not look at some lovely dinosaur bones and then listen to a real-life Cro Magnon tinkling on the keys (I mean playing them, not, you know, taking a whizz), while having a civilized bite or a cocktail at the C5 Lounge?

TONY ALLEN'S CD If you've enjoyed the dinosaur bones and cocktails at the ROM and you're still up for more, why not head to the Tranzac (Bloor & Brunswick) on Friday, Sept 16, ar around 9 pm? Tony Allen, old-time fiddler, has made a new CD and is launching it with a night of music, including a guest appearance by the aforementioned Cro Magnon man (yours truly).

Thanks everyone.

CLARET WINE BAR (2142 Queen Street East)

Some brave and intrepid local souls are setting up a new winter-time Blues Festival in the East End of Toronto. The two-day event will involve various local bars and restaurants, who will feature a variety of Toronto's finest blues musicians, covering an array of different styles and I’m honoured to be a part of it!

I will be playing a variety of blues, gospel, folk and maybe even jazzish songs, starting at 8PM. I hope you all come out and say 'hello', and maybe have a nice Shiraz or Tempranillo with your Barrelhouse Blues.

CJ Feeny aka Lee Van Leer

We’ve had some sad news. Conrad Feeny, better known as Lee Van Leer, has passed away.

He was a great song writer, performer and multi-instrumentalist who played organ, piano, guitar, bass and various other instruments and sang in a powerful, spirited voice. He was also a larger-than-life character with infectious charm and charisma, who exuded love of life.

In the early 2000s, when I was playing regularly at Graffiti’s in Kensington Market, Lee would often come and play with us, wearing his fishnet undershirt and slippers. We will miss him.

There will be a musical tribute to him at the Keating Channel Pub (2 Villiers Street) on Sunday, Feb 28, starting around 4 pm.

Hi everyone.

I hope you're all well. I wish you a very happy holiday season, and I, um, wanted to take the opportunity to spam you one last time in 2015.

This Wednesday, December 23, I will be doing my last gig at the One Room piano pop-up bar at the Fifth (225 Richmond Street West), from 5:30 pm to 10:30 pm. They have a selection of very nice wines, cheese and chacuterie plates (is that how you spell 'chacuterie'?) and access to the pub menu as well, with yours truly noodlin...g tastefully.

If you have nothing else to do and you've already counted all the aphids on your poincettas (is that how you spell 'poincettas'?), please come on down.

All the best and I hope you have a great 2016.

PS, please feel free to share this message. Happy holidays, thank you, and all the best in the coming new year.

Hello again everyone.... just a little update and friendly reminder, tonight's performance at The Fifth (wine/piano pop-up bar) "One Room" will start at 5:30 and go to 10:30, so if you're out & about taking advantage of Black Friday Bargains, or simply had a long day of work, stop by, say hi, and unwind with a nice glass of wine and some fine music. "One Room" is located at 221 Richmond Street West, Toronto, M5V 1W2 (Duncan/Richmond).

The Fifth is opening up a wine/piano "pop-up" bar called "One Room" from Nov 26 (tomorrow!) to Dec 23. It's located at 221 Richmond Street West, Toronto, M5V 1W2 (Duncan/Richmond).

It will be open on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 5:30 pm and on Saturdays from 8 pm (except when it's closed for special functions). There will be a selection of fine wines, cheeses and "nibbles", which go well with barrelhouse blues. Julian will be providing the latter... on most of those days. (Please check the website for precise dates/times.)

While this is going on, Julian will be on hiatus from Gate 403, but will return to the Gate in January 2016. So, if you're in the mood for some wine, cheese, nibbles and piano blues, please drop in to One Room -- Julian would love to see some friendly faces. There's no cover.

Julian will be there on Thu Nov 26 5:30-10:30 pm (Grand Opening!), Fri Nov 27 5:30-10:30 pm, Sat Nov 28 8-11 pm, Wed Dec 2 5:30-10:30 pm, Fri Dec 4 5:30-10:30 pm, Sat Dec 5 8-11 pm, Sat Dec 12 8-11 pm, Wed Dec 16 5:30-10:30 pm, and Wed Dec 23 5:30-10:30 pm.
