Support the Moore family in demanding justice for Kayla. justiceforkaylamoore.wordpress.com Transcription of Audio: "My name is Maria Moore. I am here to speak about my sister Kayla Moore and I'm representing Justice 4 Kayla Moore. Kayla was a poet. She was a published poet. She was a writer. She had a genius I.Q. And she was transgender. From a small age, since she was about 5 years old, that girl liked to dress in girls' clothes. That's what she felt comfortable as. And, you know, she was lucky to be in a family that supported that and supported her. She loved to laugh, she loved to have fun, she loved to be with her friends and party and, you know, she loved to cook. Whatever she made she shared with her neighbors, she shared with her friends. The typical story that has been happening around the world that you have heard a million times before: You have someone who is mentally ill, loved ones and family call police and within minutes that person is dead when the police arrive. It just enrages me every time I tell that story, because they could have saved her. They could have done a lot of things but they didn't do that. They let her die. And it took us almost 4 months to get the police report and the coroner's report which they had days after she was killed. The fact is, officers are not capable at this time to provide that mental help, that de-escalation. Because it wasn't a death that was caused by a gunshot, the district attorney won't investigate. So, what we were left with was the Police Review Commission to somehow provide justice. And I'm sorry, but the PRC are just cops policing other cops. We have a list of demands. [Demands as text on screen: 1) Justice for Kayla Moore! Honor her memory, tell her story, #SayHerName. 2) Hold the City of Berkeley and Berkeley police accountable for killing Kayla Moore. 3) Police Must not be first responders to mental health emergencies. 4) End the BPD's violent attacks, criminalization, and profiling of people who are Black, Brown, trans and/or disabled.] For our family justice is creating policy and change and this is about making them responsible."
