FOUR GRULLA Gators & Lady Gators Wrestlers Compete at the STATE MEET
Two Lady Gators and two Gators represented Grulla High School at the prestigious Wrestling STATE MEET at the Berry Center Complex in Houston, Texas. This is the FINAL competition in Wrestling in the State of Texas. After so many dual-, tri- and quad-meets that began in November, 2017, our Grulla wrestlers did well at STATE.
Because there are extremely few schools in Division 4A that compete in wrestling,... all the competitions that our Grulla wrestlers competed in were against 5A and 6A teams—including at the STATE MEET!!! So, we feel honored to have FOUR of our wrestlers (two Gators and two Lady Gators) reach the ultimate competition—the STATE MEET in the higher division of 5A.
Head Coach Oscar Ozuna stated, “Our kids represented Grulla High School very well. There was a lot of improvement from last year. Ivan Ozuna and Carolyn Villarreal both placed in the TOP 10—EIGHTH/NINTH out of 16 in each Division. Zabrina Montalvo placed TWELFTH.”
“We are losing three seniors—Abram Vela, Aaron Salinas and my cornerstone Ivan Ozuna. It is sad to see them go. But they all have excellent futures and we expect great things from them. Looking at the bright side, I have three STATE qualifiers with experience coming back and 8 Gators and 4 Lady Gators with REGIONAL experience. So, the program will be pretty strong this coming year and for a few years to come. We will be trying to recruit more boys and girls into our program.”
Coach Ozuna is very proud of the help he received throughout the season from his assistant coaches—Gilbert "Billy" Sepulveda and Perla Ramirez. “They deserve a lot of the credit for helping me and the kids. They are the best,” concluded Coach Ozuna.
Indeed, all of GATOR NATION is very proud of all the awesome accomplishments achieved by our Gators and Lady Gator wrestlers throughout the season. We love you all and are looking forward to next year.
