Khanyile faces eight charges of public violence, assault, creating a nuisance and possession of explosives.

Economic Freedom Fighter (EFF) leader Julius Malema announced on Thursday that he will be visiting the arrested #FeesMustFall student leader Education Khanyile at the Westiville Prison, in KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday.

Khanyile was arrested at the Durban University of Technology on September 27, during the violent #FeesMustFall protests. He remains the only student behind ba...rs after being denied bail by the Durban Magistrate’s Court. Magistrate Jackie Jonck denied Khanyile bail reasoning that the large support base for Khanyile in court indicated his influence over others.

Among those who will be joining Malema to his visit to Westville Prison is Floyd Shivambu, Godrick Gardee, Advocate Dali Mpofu and Phiwaba Madokwe for the EFF Student Command.

Gardee, EFF secretary-general, said the movement would be sending a message of support to Khanyile. He said they would leave no stone untouched to ensure he is released and confirmed the movement is offering legal support to students in need. However he did say the EFF was not an organisation to provide legal representatives.

“We will tell him to keep strong and know that his country and it’s people are in solidarity with him in this time of trauma,” he said.

Eastern Cape universities will be forced to turn away thousands of prospective first-year students‚ even if they received good matric results.

At Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) alone‚ spokeswoman Zandile Mbabela said they had received more than 112 000 first-year applicants even though they would be able to accommodate only 6 500.

The situation is just as bad at Walter Sisulu University of Technology as it will have to reject 22 500 of the 30 000 applications. ...Mbabela said that every year the university received more pupils who showed interest in the university and every year there were more than they could take in.

"We just hope that those who applied at NMMU have also applied to other universities‚" Mbabela said.

Attending the African National Congress’ (ANC) 105th birthday bash at Orlando Stadium on Sunday would make you a “traitor”‚ Julius Malema said on Thursday.

The Economic Freedom Fighters leader launched into a Twitter tirade‚ saying the “occasion is for the politically connected black elite‚ it is their opportunity to show off their ill-gotten wealth”.

?@Julius–S–Malema tweeted: “If you are young and find yourself at Orlando stadium on sunday then you are a traitor‚ the unempl...oyed and the poor in Soweto must stay home”.

He also posted that the celebration “is the festival of the rich‚ the only way to keep them out of power is to remove anything that smells @MYANC in Joburg and Tshwane”.

He had‚ just prior to the rant‚ also cast doubts on the ANC’s claims that it would “reclaim Gauteng…in 2019”.

He urged his coalition partners in the Democratic Alliance-run Johannesburg and Tshwane metros to “remove all ANC-deployed cadres” from the citys’ administrations.

The ANC’s birthday bash made headlines this week when Gauteng economic development MEC Lebogang Maile had to backtrack on a plan to extend liquor trading hours at Orlando Stadium for the weekend following a public outcry

Many homes have outdoor sensors installed as a further safety measure to protect their homes from criminal activity.

The sensor beams are spread across the yard, around the house, and are set to trigger an alarm once disturbed. However, some sensors are adjusted to not reach below a certain height to avoid having pets – large dogs in particular – trigger the alarm.

The footage shows that criminals are aware of this limitation to the sensors, using the ‘pet-friendly’ system to... their advantage. The video shows a criminal crawling across the grass and checking for potential entry points into the house.

The DA intends laying criminal charges against a man who made a call on Facebook for mosques to be burnt down, the party’s youth league said on Thursday.

It also intended lodging a complaint against the man behind the post, Liam Christian Ferreira, with the SA Human Rights Commission, DA Youth League chairperson Yusuf Cassim said in a statement.

“We are still working with our lawyers to prepare the necessary documents and affidavits,” Cassim said.

...

The charges were being laid on the grounds of incitement to violence.

“The incitement to burn down places of worship is a criminal act which should not be taken lightly.”

Cassim called on all South Africans to unite against racism and bigotry.

News24 reported on Tuesday that Ferreira posted on the Facebook group "Langebaan" that the public should stand up against Muslim prayer calls.

"I think it’s a crime that no one is sanding up to those muslim bastards blaring their call to pray 5 times a day over massive speakers. Why do i need to put up with an Arabic tradition created in the dessert thousands of years ago. Stand up for yourselves!!! Burn it down!!! [sic]," the Facebook post reads.

The man went into cardiac arrest, and all resuscitation efforts by Netcare 911 paramedics were unsuccessful.

An unidentified man was killed after being assaulted while tied to a chair with a wire in one of Randfontein’s plot areas on Thursday.

According to Athlenda Mathe, Netcare 911 spokesperson, the incident took place at around 12.39pm on 8th Road in Hillside, the Randfontein Herald reported.

...

“Netcare 911 paramedics responded to an emergency call and found a severely assaulted man. He was allegedly tied to a chair in his home.

The critically injured man was stabilised on scene and intubated by an advanced life support (ALS) paramedic,” said Mathe.

The man’s injuries were so extensive, the Netcare2 helicopter was dispatched along with two emergency care practitioners (EMPs) as well as a critical care assistant (CCA) to monitor his condition.

Mathe added the man subsequently went into cardiac arrest, and all resuscitation efforts by Netcare 911 paramedics were unsuccessful. The man was declared dead on scene.

According to Pottie Potgieter, Mapogo reaction officer, when he arrived on scene, witnesses told him they had seen the man being dropped off in the road by a white bakkie, which later sped off.

Mathe said Randfontein Police are currently investigating the incident.

The woman was hit six times with the flat side of a panga as she tried to crawl to her baby’s room.

A couple were brutally beaten up and robbed when their house in Loxley Estate, Sheffield Beach, was burgled on New Year’s Eve.

Craig and Lauren Glutz, and their nine-month-old baby, had moved into the estate only a week before the incident. They were woken to the sight of five men armed with pangas, knives and screwdivers surrounding their bed, the North Coast Courier reported....

Lauren’s mother, Catherine Rattray, said the couple had been bound with cable ties before being beaten up.

“Loxley Estate is supposed to be a safe estate with 24-hour security.

“My daughter was hit six times with the flat side of a panga as she tried to crawl to her baby’s room.”

The beating caused severe bruising and haematoma.

“My son-in-law had his wrist and finger sliced as he tried to fend off an attack with a knife. He spent several hours in surgery having the nerves and tendons reattached.”

Rattray said the couple was staying with her as they were traumatised and could not return home. The robbers took everything.

“My daughter is a professional photographer and she had every bit of her equipment taken, including all her hard drives containing images of three weddings. She begged the men not to take the hard drives.

“Now the couples whose wedding she photographed will not have any photos. She is distraught about this.”

Rattray said her daughter’s neigbours told her they had been robbed the night before.

“They also said some holidaymakers had been held at knife point a few houses away.”

They are offering a substantial reward for the equipment.

Contact David Rattray on 083 450 1877.

The Loxley Estate developers declined to comment.

The EFF leader says ANC’s January 8 birthday celebration ‘is a festival of the rich’.

Leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Julius Malema has called on the Democratic Alliance (DA) to remove ANC “cadres” in the administrative offices of Tshwane and Johannesburg.

This comes three days ahead of the ANC’s 105th birthday celebration to be held at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto.

...

Malema says any young person who will attend the event will be a traitor, and that the “Sunday occasion” is a gathering of the rich who are only going there to show off their ill-gotten wealth.

The former fervent supporter of the ANC says the oldest liberation movement in South Africa will not reclaim the votes of Tshwane and Johannesburg, not even in the 2019 national government elections. This after the EFF voted for the DA to take over power in the metros, removing the ANC for the first time since 1994.

#ANC105 is the festival of the rich, the only way to keep them out of power is to remove anything that smells @MYANC in Joburg and Tshwane,” wrote Malema.

“The Sunday occasion is for the politically connected black elite, it is their opportunity to show off their ill gotten wealth.

“If you are young and find yourself at Orlando stadium on sunday then you are a traitor, the unemployed and the poor in Soweto must stay home.

“The @MYANC will not reclaim Gauteng, not even in 2019. The @Our_DA must now remove all ANC deployed cadres in the admin of Joburg and Tshwane.”

The January 8 birthday event has been hit with negative reporting, with some alleging the ANC applied to the Gauteng Liquor Board to extend trading hours during the birthday celebrations over the weekend. This was due to the expected influx of ANC supporters.

However, the ANC’s head of campaigns, Fikile Mbalula, denied these allegations, saying the party had no authority or influence over the liquor board.

“We have noted reports in the media, which have been to a certain extent exaggerated, as far as them being apportioned to the organising of our event. The ANC would like to state clear and categorically that we do not decide on opening times of alcohol, beer, hops and their closure at any given time, and we have got no call with regard to that.

“We think everything that is being done to ensure that we are a healthy nation, and caution our people in terms of excessive drinking, must also equally apply as we embark and host this particular event in Gauteng. Any reports that associates the ANC with regard to the changing of times with regard to selling of alcohol and accessibility have nothing and neither are they prescribed by the leadership of the movement.”

The victim is in hospital, while the suspect remains at large.

A woman was attacked by an unknown assailant and stabbed multiple times while she was out jogging in Sandton, Gauteng, reports the Sandton Chronicle.

The attack occurred on New Year’s Day at around 8am while she was jogging in the field near Hamilton and Devonshire avenues in Bryanston near the Braamfontein Spruit trail.

...

Constable David Mothapo, spokesperson for the Sandton Police Station, said the woman was running alone when she was attacked by an unknown man and then stabbed multiple times.

“The victim is currently in hospital and unable to give us a statement of what happened. A domestic, who works in the area, witnessed the attack that took place. She saw that the victim had been stabbed and notified a security company of the incident,” said Mothapo.

He said that the community should be alert when they used the Hamilton Park and Braamfontein Spruit area, to be cautious and aware, and to jog or cycle in groups, not to be alone.

“If the community witnesses anything suspicious they should alert the police immediately,” said Mothapo.

He stated that the suspect was still at large and a case of attempted murder was being investigated.

“The community is urged not to spread unfounded rumours with regards to this incident. Any information with regards to this case should be reported to Sandton police,” he urged.

The league is concerned that ‘private schools get far better education if compared to the rest of the nation’.

The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) said on Thursday it was concerned about the country’s separated education systems, saying that private schools were given preferential treatment in contrast to public schools.

In a statement, the ANCYL spokesperson Mlondi Mkhize said private schools continued to get far better education when compared with the rest of... the country.

“We wish to register our concern with the manner in which preferential treatment is given to private schools in contrast to public schools,” Mkhize said.

“Private schools continue to get far better education if compared to the rest of the nation. As if that was not enough, their results are given to them ahead of other learners.”

Mkhize said government must act to curb the undesirable outcomes of these systems.

“This act must stop, otherwise it seeks to inculcate a notion that private services are better then public services. It affirms the centrality of money in order to get a better education,” Mkhize said.

“We call on our government to stop this practice before it gets worse.”

The ANCYL also congratulated all provinces that had increased their pass rate in contrast to last year’s pass rate “against the background of a nation that is in demand of free education”.

“We want to acknowledge among those provinces that have done well, Free State, Gauteng, North West, KwaZulu Natal and Mpumalanga,” Mkhize said.

“We hope that other provinces will take lessons from the ones that have done better in increasing their pass rates, thus accelerating service delivery to our people.”

Mkhize urged all pupils who didn’t perform well in matric to use the opportunity presented by the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) in its NSC Second Chance Programme.

He said they wished well all those who had passed matric, saying that they should get ready for another struggle in pursuit of education in institutions of higher learning.

“Learners should consider both universities as well as Technical Vocational Education and Training Colleges for furthering their studies,” Mkhize said.

“As this year registered the highest number of matriculants, so should the post-school infrastructure be expanded in order to accommodate more students.”

In a Facebook post, he said blacks stole money to go on holiday, and he hoped they would drown one by one.

Following a turbulent 2016 that saw several racist incidents being reported on social media and questions around the country’s reconciliation after decades of racial segregation, 2017 might prove to be yet another year of hate speech based on race.

In the latest incident online, a Limpopo man, Phillip Roodt, called black bathers cockroaches on Facebook.

...

He described crowded beaches in Amanzimtoti, south of Durban, where he recently went on holiday, with the words:

“Good afternoon from a pitch-black Amanzimtoti where the sea is a tar road full of potholes. Dear damn I can’t believe how many black cockroaches are having a holiday on stolen money and on robbed white people’s tax money. I hope the f***ers drown one by one.”

According to publicly available information on his Facebook, Roodt is 59 and self-employed as a boilermaker.

His comments come almost a year to the day since KwaZulu-Natal real estate agent Penny Sparrow was exposed for her racist Facebook comments after she compared black bathers to monkeys.

Sparrow, who’s been subsequently ordered by the Equality Court in Umzinto to pay R150 000 to the Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Foundation for her post, faced the criminal charge of crimen injuria and had to pay an additional fine for that charge.

She is understood not to have made the payments yet.

A Muslim man has slammed the City of Cape Town for being culturally insensitive after his wife was barred from a public pool for dressing modestly.

The 32-year-old father from Cafda said officials at the newly renovated Retreat indoor pool told his wife she cannot swim in a burkini.

Ikraam Philander said his wife was wearing a headscarf and the two-piece swimsuit which covers the whole body except the face, hands and feet – in accordance with the Islamic dress code for women....

Philander, his wife, who asked not to be identified, and two children arrived at the pool on Saturday just after 11am.

“I went for a dive first and a lifeguard called me over to say diving was not allowed,” he said. “I did not see any signs to that effect, but I complied.

“But a few minutes later this woman came screaming at me. She was rude and arrogant, and unnecessary, as I had already told the lifeguard I understood I could not dive.”

Philander said his wife then decided to go for a swim, but she was also treated badly.

“As a Muslim woman, she must be covered and I would never allow her to wear anything unsuitable,” he explained.

“She wore a [burkini] to cover her aurah [modesty]. They told her she can’t go into the water like that and I just decided then and there we should leave.”

He said at that point they’d only been at the pool for 15 minutes and he requested a refund, which was denied.

He now demands a public apology and insists the City investigate the matter.

Anda Ntsodo, Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services, apologised for the incident, and explained that bathing rules are in place for the safety of the public.

Clothing such as jeans, or tops that “balloon” in the water are “unsafe”.

Bathing costumes, tight-fitting shorts and tops are, however, acceptable.

“The City is mindful and sensitive to the acceptable forms of attire within different cultural groups, including Muslim women,” said Ntsodo.

“The City would like to apologise for this incident and the discomfort that it caused to the residents.

“We are looking into the matter and will ensure that our staff undergo further cultural sensitivity training where needed.”

The burkini has sparked controversy in other countries, especially France last year, where at least 20 towns banned the swimsuits, citing a possible link to Islamic extremism. A French court later suspended the ban.

KwaZulu-Natal education MEC Mthandeni Dlungwane on Thursday welcomed the province’s improved matric results, but said it was still embarrassing to have schools where there was a zero percent pass rate among those who wrote the 2016 examinations.

Dlungwane said that a number of measures had been put in place in a bid to improve the performance of the province’s matriculants, which saw the province boost it’s pass rate from 61.6 percent to 69.5 percent.

“It is, however, with ...deep sense of embarrassment, disappointment and disbelief that in 2016 the province had 9 schools that obtained a 0% pass rate.

The number of 0% pass rate schools only decreased by five from the 14 schools in 2015,” he said, speaking in Durban at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre.

He said it was still a concern that there were 215 schools in the province that obtained a pass rate of 30 percent or less.

He said that there were 147 646 matriculants who actually sat the exams.

There were 12 938 progressed learners who wrote the examinations, of whom only 4 495 passed, representing a 34.6 percent pass rate.

Progressed learners are those who have failed Grade 11 twice and have been pushed through to Grade 12, and who are too old to be retained in the school system.

A little under 25 percent of those who passed obtained a bachelor’s pass – or university entrance as it is commonly known.

“We are pleased to announce that the province has improved in the pass percentages in mathematics and physical sciences compared to 2015,” he said.

The mathematics pass rate in the province improved from 33.23 percent to 37.91 percent, while in science it went up to 57.76 percent from 51.81 percent.

There were 85 schools that obtained a 100 percent pass rate, which was up on the 66 schools that achieved the same feat in 2015.

“We congratulate and encourage all the candidates that have passed to pursue further studies towards their bright future.

On the other hand we wish to state that we are very worried about the number of students who failed in 2016 which is alarmingly too high,” he said.

Operators at the police’s 10111 call centres are concerned staff shortages will cripple service delivery.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) centre in Port Elizabeth has already fallen victim to the problems and had more than 400 calls reportedly going unanswered this week.

The centre has less than 15 people on a shift manning more than 20 phone lines.

...

Last month, call centre agents in Gauteng threatened to go on strike because of an apparent lower pay compared to their Western Cape counterparts.

The SA Police Union's Andre Scheepers says a lack of manpower poses a risk: “The situation in December, with high numbers of missed calls and staff spending more time on a call, is an indication of what could happen if this is not addressed. That could be detrimental to the community and people who may require emergency services.”

The union's general secretary Oscar Skommere says Gauteng's issues were raised a few years ago.

“With the new management the employees realised that those things are not possible and that’s where the problem started, resulting in them deciding to go on strike.”
