Next come the panels, which will be finished ever so slightly darker than the arches themselves, at the request of the client. Once they were on, we couldn't resist a preview of the middle on the base. #altarbuild2017 #altar #woodworking #finewoodworking #stayvirtuous

Here's the middle portion of the altar, a.k.a. what all those Gothic arches were for! There will be panels behind them, but this is the structure and focal point. #altarbuild2017 #altar #woodworking #finewoodworking #stayvirtuous

Here are the #gothicarches for the sides in various stages of completion. There's something about pattern routing that makes me feel at once like a genius and a cheater; it's just so precise, yet so easy! I just keep telling myself that one day, when the deadline isn't so tight, I'll learn to do this stuff by hand. Even if I continue to do it by power tools, at least I'll know how to do it both ways 😃 #altarbuild2017 #altar #woodworking #finewoodworking #stayvirtuous

That's a lot of wood! Around 300 board feet of (mostly) riftsawn #whiteoak, plus plywood and custom trim we had made. Ideally we would have made it ourselves, but when you're on a deadline and have another quality craftsman you trust, collaboration is a wonderful option. #woodworking #finewoodworking #altar #altarbuild2017 #stayvirtuous

This is the Abbey for which we recently built an altar. Be sure to read the post to find out if they liked it! 😉

The General Chapter: Abbot Joseph departed for the General Chapter of the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance on Sunday, 3 September. The overnight fl...ight from Dulles to Fumicino, Rome allowed him to begin his trek to Assisi on the normal arrival day for the various superiors coming from all around the world. A bus chartered for the occasion took them to the Domus Pacis, a conference center on the outskirts of Assisi. [ 744 more words ]

Several months ago we were commissioned to design build an #altar for Holy Cross Abbey, a #trappist monastery in Berryville, VA. It was designed with traditional #cistercian architectural influences and will be made of #whiteoak. Actual progress shots will follow over the next few days. #woodworking #finewoodworking #stayvirtuous #altarbuild2017
