"I first met Jimmy Scott through the remarkable songwriter Doc Pomus. I'd heard about him for many years. At the gathering after Doc's passing Jimmy sang. He has the voice of an angel and can break your heart. He did that day and many others.I've heard and even sung with Jimmy many times since then. Here is the singer's singer if labels mean any thing. Listening to Jimmy is like having a performing heart. The experience of life and the art of expression sing through Jimmy and make us partners in his incredible passion. I love him and I never want to say goodbye. When the song stops with Jimmy's last note we're back in the world as it was. Not quite so pretty, not quite so passionate. And we can only wait for Jimmy to sing again and take us that little bit higher."

Lou was very vocal about championing Jimmy Scott, always quick to name him as one of this favorite singers when the topic arose. If you'd ever listened to Lou's New York Shuffle, there's a good chance you've heard him sing Jimmy's praises. This photo of Jimmy, Lou, Laurie, Antony, David, and Bette still hangs in Lou's apartment, framed. Here are a few video selections to enjoy as we remember Jimmy Scott today.

We stumbled upon this Transformer sweater vest in a box in Lou's storage space alongside old fan mail. Admittedly the color scheme is, let's kindly say, too festive? But the remarkable part is that all the red yarn was knit into the sweater by hand. So hats off to whoever put this together.
Archive update:
We found Lou's copy of the VU & Nico LP the other day. He hadn't peeled the sticker.
From the archive:
Any idea who drew this?
We came across this illustration in a box without anything to identify where or whom it came from. Anyone out there know who the artist is?

CBC have posted a whole bunch more videos and photographs from Kevin Hearn's tribute to Lou from back in March. You'll probably recognize a lot of familiar faces if you'd been to one of Lou's shows over the last several years as a lot of his band members took part.

A very interesting story from Nils Lofgren about his experience co-writing songs with Lou is in this interview with Rolling Stone.
--

RS: In the liner notes of the box, you talk about writing songs with Lou Reed for your Nils albums in 197...9 — and having him dictate the lyrics to you?

NL: That was the wildest thing. Lou didn't co-write, so we were thrilled that he was open to do it. We met at his house and were drinking pretty heavily and watching football — he was a big Dallas fan. For starters, I said, "Why don't I send you a cassette of ideas?" A month went by and I hadn't heard from him. Then out of the blue, he called and woke me up in the middle of the night in my house in Maryland and said, "I've been up for three days and nights — I've done 13 songs down. Get something to write with and I'll dictate the lyrics." I was sound asleep, but I put on a pot of coffee and sat there and he dictated. By the time the sun had come up, I hung up the phone and said, "I just wrote 13 songs with Lou Reed." He used three of them on The Bells, and I used some on Nils. Now that Lou's passed — an awful loss — I have to go back and resurrect some of the ones left behind. There are probably four left, finished songs set to my music. Originally when I looked at them, I thought, "Maybe these are lyrics only Lou Reed can deliver." They're really out there. But what the hell — my poor friend is gone.

a star newly emerging"

Happy birthday Lou. From your friends, family, and fans.

We thought today would be a good day to announce that the Lou Reed Archive is currently a work in progress. There are stacks upon stacks of boxes, full of hundreds of tapes, photographs, artwork, hard drives, letters, and more that will be transferred, cataloged, and assembled into an incredible archive. It's a long road ahead and we'll be sharing our progress along the way right here on the Lou Reed facebook and twitter pages so stay tuned!

Stephan Berwick, friend and Tai Chi brother of Lou, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund a feature-length version of Final Weapon.

Final Weapon was originally released in 2010 as a short film. It stars Master Ren Guang Yi, Lou's long-time Tai Chi teacher, and features a cameo appearance by and the music of Lou.
The guitar feedback drone installation by Lou's friend and former guitar tech, Stewart Hurwood, will again be on display at The Kitchen in Chelsea on Tuesday 12/17 from 11am-1pm. The installation is based on Lou's guitar feedback method used on Metal Machine Music (1975) and the MM3 tour (2008-09).

From Stewart Hurwood:

In 1975 Lou Reed released Metal Machine Music.

Lou told me that he ostrich tuned his guitar, propped it against the speaker, set the whole thing into feedback and recorded it to tape! This was the armature for the album.

Around 2008 Lou decided he wanted to take this concept and tour with it in the live environment. I spent days to determine how best to make and control guitar feedback. After tweaking and testing Lou decided we should use a
minimum four-guitar and amp combination.

We would set these amps feeding back half an hour before the MM3 concert commenced and watch the audiences get drawn into a meditative state. Lou named the guitar and amp feedback, “The Drones”!

The Drones set the sonic platform from which the MM3 trio would springboard and freeform.

Lou Reed fed on raw energy and loved loud guitar amplifiers feeding back!
During one session Lou looked up at me and yelled, “I feel healed in the Drones”!
Later, we discussed the idea of sonic massage; sound resonation in the body's cavities, attenuating in the internal organs and healing.

For some it will be loud and you are advised to protect your hearing (earplugs will be available at the gallery).

Be well!
