Wish I had started coming sooner; I'm scheduled to leave town very soon. :-/
But I will try to return before I go!
Saw my first show at Strange Brew Lounge Side on Friday morning and was blown away. The Wood Brothers played as part of the KDRP showcase and was blown away by the sound quality, inti...macy, and vibe of the venue.
HIGHLY recommend and will be back soon. (Would love to play there at some point too...)
So when Scott posted that it was seven years ago yesterday since he had first opened Strange Brew, beyond feeling all kinds of sad and sentimental I realized I really needed to dig this one out of the archives and finally post it. I shot it that night last minute, Scott thought it'd be cool to have some video from the Shinyribs, original plan was just to throw my camera on a tripod just to have it. Not sure when I decided to get more ambitious but before it started I figured ...I'd do one of these type of vids where I basically record everything and boil all the footage down to make it look like it's live-ish with multiple cameras. Not really really live since they did two shows and Kevin wears two different shirts but you get the idea.
When I first made it I thought I'd save it thinking/hoping that when the Shinyribs played the next time I could blast out this vid to help promote it ... not that they need a lot of promotion to fill a place but that was the thought. When Strange Brew, Lounge Side initially closed it's doors I was pretty much what ya would call in denial. I thought of this vid and thought, well when they re-open I'll release the vid to coincide with the relaunch. I waited, and I waited, actually couldn't really imagine that there was a chance they wouldn't.
And so time went on, and eventually it was announced that Quacks was moving in which meant the jig was up. There was no coming back ... I miss being in denial.
So here it is, hope it brings back some happy memories for others as it did for me. To be completely cliche', thanks for the memories, miss you all!
Just a quick little update, ya know, the same kind as always, nothing much to announce. Well, other than this tid-bit:
So many reasons to love Kacy Crowley
An uninformative update: A recent sweet and well meaning message to this page made the suggestion that some of the frustration out there is because of a lack of communication from us here at Strange Brew. Trust me, I understand. One can look at the page, the website, Hold My Ticket, Twitter, the news, posts by patrons, posts by artists, posts from employees, and still feel left nothing but confused. It's frustrating, it's disappointing, it's scary, it's sad ... but it's not o...ver, at least not yet.
The best that I can tell you is that the powers that be have been working tirelessly without reprieve since the doors were closed and will, I am certain, continue to do so until either the doors are re-opened or every single possible remedy or option has been utterly and totally exhausted. Though I know little, if not just as much as you, I will continue to be hopeful and optimistic till the very last as to me Strange Brew is more than just a coffee shop or just a live music venue. It is something extraordinary, wonderful, and rare, and somewhat of a surprise in how much it's meant to so many. It's a cumulative product of the artists, patrons, and employees that work in tandem, even if oblivious to the interconnection, that's felt by just about anyone and everyone who's ever been. There are few places that I've been where I've witnessed so many customers being so outgoing and helpful to other customers. Where show goers have as much of an affect on the performers as the performers have on the audience.
It's meant a lot to many and has since the day Scott opened the place. As an outsider it was incredible to see how it grew, won awards, got acts that I would have never expected to see in such a setting. Introduced me to so many incredible artists that I hadn't known, wouldn't have known, had it not been for Strange Brew, and they're all on my phone and on my playlist and I can sing along to every song. Songs from bands that weren't even bands when Strange Brew opened but came to be to the delight of many.
I don't want to list all the names, I don't want to point out all the positions of the incredible people I work with, or the stand out customers who everyone knows as much as they know the employees or bands or acts or artists! The list would never end. And I don't want this to sound like it's an epitaph, because it's not, think Monty Python "I'm not dead yet!" But, when encouraged by a loyal customer that it would mean a lot if we communicated more, well, this is what happened as a result. We miss you more than you miss us and when there's a final word, when there's something definitive we can share, I promise, we will share. Until then ...
There's no brunch tomorrow friends (Sunday 011517). We are hanging on in great hopes that things will work out over at Strange Brew, Lounge Side we love you and... all your support for the Central Texas Food Bank and for our little weekly show. If you have friends planning on going, please let them know. Stay positive you never know what can happen! - Plank
