With today being Presidents Day, we present to you one of Lunenburg's most famous residents, George S. Boutwell, who served as Secretary of the Treasury under President Grant and Commissioner of Internal Revenue under President Lincoln. Born in Brookline in 1818, his family moved to a farm in Lunenburg in 1820 where he was raised and educated. He entered politics in the 1840's and went on to represent Massachusetts as both a Senator and its 20th Governor. He is also noted for... helping to found the Republican Party. He would often tell stories about his childhood in Lunenburg to Grant and Lincoln. OK that we do not know, but it would be pretty cool and maybe it did happen you never know! Boutwell Street is named for him. To learn more about this well known Lunenburger, visit his Wikipedia page here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_S._Boutwell
