Marsha Berzins and Sally Mounier have teamed up with The Salvation Army, Highpoint Church and the Mississippi Avenue Baptist Church to spend an evening with neighborhood folks lling backpacks with much needed school supplies for the 2018 school year. The cost for the backpack and supplies are being borne by Marsha and Sally plus a very generous business in the area but they can’t do it alone and need your help. Please consider volunteering a few hours helping ll those backpacks. Thank you!

Tomorrow! Come out and be a part of the fun!

We celebrated Dan Jr.'s 1st Birthday this weekend. He's such a good boy and really enjoyed his bbq cookout in the park. Happy Birthday, Junior!

Today I toured our new Day Resource Center, which will open July 19, to serve our homeless in Aurora. It will help them get back on their feet and was entirely paid for by marijuana tax revenue. Go Aurora!

Moorhead Recreation Center reopened after an extensive renovation including a new pool and water slide. I'm so glad I had a part in creating a better quality of life for all citizens in this area. Check it out! We also have a new recreation center in the works off Tower Road to be completed in about 2 years. We're on the right track to make life better for Aurora!

Hello Facebook friends. Aurora City Council tonight on second reading voted 7-3 in favor of sending to the voters a charter change that someday might result in the creation of an Entertainment District near I-70 and Hudson Road. After hearing from constituents and talking with people on both sides of the issue, I joined CMs Richardson and Cleland in voting NO. I opposed referring this to the voters mostly because of the very abbreviated process the entertainment district prop...onents took to place it on the November ballot. Typically, I’m a supporter of economic development. I'm sure that if it’s planned correctly, such an entertainment district could be a boon for jobs, tax revenue and more economic activity in Aurora. However, as much as I support economic development, I am even bigger supporter of transparency and due process. With the voters having turned this proposal down just two years ago, I think it’s especially important to educate Council Members so they can in turn inform their constituents. How is this proposal different from the one offered in 2015? Will there be a casino included in the allowable uses? Will the taxpayers be on the hook in any way? With questions like these going largely unanswered, I am mystified by the rush to send this to the November ballot. According to City Attorney Mike Hyman, the deadline for Council to refer an ordinance to the voters is July 28th. I had hoped we could use the ample time between now and then for a more comprehensive community discussion about the impacts, benefits and downsides of a project that in my opinion has inspired more questions than answers.

Today I enjoyed being part of the Immigrant Heritage Month celebration. Stories of Immigrants were shared as well as information on citizenship, counseling, entrepreneur classes and yummy food. There was dancing, music and great conversation. This was put on by our Aurora Office of International and Immigrant Affairs and hosted by Community College of Aurora.
