VIDEO: Update from Worcester County District Attorney Joe Early on Vanessa Marcotte's Homicide in Princeton.

Good afternoon,

We've made some progress in the case. I have a brief statement in Vanessa Marcotte's homicide.

...

We believe that there was a struggle between Vanessa and her killer. The assailant, who we know was a man, may have sustained injuries in that struggle, specifically scratches, scrapes and or bruises. Therefore, we would ask that anyone who has observed a male with these types of injuries that would have been fresh earlier this week to please contact us at the State Police Tipline at 508-453-7589.

Evidence and information we have developed so far leads us to believe that there was a struggle between Vanessa and her assailant resulting in scratches, scrapes or bruises. Anyone who has observed a male with these types of injuries in the past few days, please contact the State Police Tipline at 508-453-7589.

Also, are now focusing on a more narrow time frame, between 1 and 3 p.m. on Sunday on Brooks Station Road. Anyone who observed a vehicle, moving or parked, on that road during the timeframe of 1 to 3 p.m. time frame should contact the State Police Tipline at 508-453-7589.

K9 Dakota displays the Versatility of State Police Canines

On Wednesday August 17th, Trooper Steve Barnes and K9 Dakota were assigned to assist the Norwood Police Department with a demonstration at their Summer Youth Academy. While in Norwood and before the demonstration commenced, Norwood Police were attempting to serve an arrest warrant for a wanted sex offender when he fled back into a residence and hid in an unknown location. Trooper Barnes responded with Dakota to assi...st. To complicate matters, the house the suspect was hiding in was filled from floor to ceiling with hoarded goods. Trooper Barnes deployed Dakota on a building search. Dakota was able to locate the suspect hiding in the basement and he was taken into custody by Norwood Police without incident. Trooper Barnes and Dakota then reported to the Coakley Middle School and completed their demonstration for the Norwood Police Summer Youth Academy. K9 Dakota is also one of the K9 Unit’s three certified cadaver detection canines.

Pictured here is K-9 Dakota with the kids at the youth academy, clearly enjoying the attention. Thanks to Norwood Police for sharing these photos of Trooper Barnes and Dakota.

Current events have reminded us of the safety threats and the political and social challenges we, in Law Enforcement, face each day. Every now and then we are also reminded, through simple acts of gratitude and kindness, what makes our jobs so special.

In July, Madison DiGrigoli of Lenox made a special delivery to the State Police barracks in Lee. Madison, who is going into the 4th grade this September, wanted to do something nice for her local police departments during h...er summer vacation. She said simply, “The police do a lot for people” and she wanted to show her gratitude.

Madison went online looking for ideas and found a project called “Law Enforcement Survival Kits”. The kits contained several sweet treats packaged in little blue bags. Each had a note affixed to it. That note explained the significance of the thoughtful contents as follows:

Lifesaver, to remind you of the many times you have been one.

Starburst, for extra burst of energy you’ll need.

Pay Day, because you aren’t in it for the money.

Gum to help everyone stick together.

Hershey’s Kisses, because you deserve all of them.

Tootsie Roll, to help you roll with the punches.

Peppermint Patty, to help you keep your cool.

Snickers, a reminder to keep your sense of humor.

Mounds, for the “mounds” of courage you show.

Madison delivered the many goodie bags to SP Lee and to the Lee Police Department. Madison said it only took a little while to put the bags together. While it also took only a little while for the contents of the bags to be eaten, the sentiment of her gift will be remembered by the B-1 Troopers for a long while.

In between her busy summer schedule of Girl Scout Camp in the Berkshires and her family trip to the beach, Madison and her Dad accepted an invitation back to SP Lee for a tour of the barracks. She also received a formal “Thank You” from the station commander, Lieutenant David Buell, on behalf of the men and women assigned to SP Lee. Lee Police Chief Jeffrey Roosa was also on hand to thank Madison for the delivery she made to his Department.

On Tuesday August 9th around 5:30 p.m., East Brookfield Police Department responded to a domestic assault and battery. On arrival, officers engaged the suspect in a foot pursuit. The suspect was able to elude officers and K9 assistance was requested. Tpr. Jeff Johnson responded. Christmas in August

This afternoon, Diamond Express of East Boston sent over a truckload of toys in support of the annual Toys for Tots program.

Matthew Beaudoin of Diamond Express, Frank Robles of the State Police Fleet Section, and Trooper Peter Morawiak braved the 100 degree heat to offload the toys for their December distribution.

...

Sure it was a little early, but clearly Diamond Express believes that charity isn't restricted to a season. We agree. Besides, with temperatures like today, it's nice to get a little Christmas spirit!
