Is California Congresswoman Maxine Waters, who's also the chair of the House Financial Services Committee, and Congresswoman Thank you so much for being here you're welcome. So let's talk about California's case load. So let's talk about California's case load so far they've been about. It's been 5150 -, one cases, 102 deaths and just to show the audience to compare New York has had 10 times times that that 50 50 - - 2315. 2315 cases and. Deaths Can you talk a little bit about what California is doing to prepare because experts are anticipating that those relatively low numbers will not last well. I think the experts are correct. Remember we were behind in testing and the more testing you do the more you can identify those who have been infected and so we we need to do a lot more testing but beside that we are working very hard. The mayor is working very hard hard. Governor Governor Governor Newsom Newsom Newsom has. has has has shown shown shown shown himself himself himself himself. to to to be be be a a a real real. real leader. leader and so Indiana. to. to to the the ship. You just identified mercy they're looking at our convention Center and I have been looking at Robert Kennedy Hospital, a hospital that's been closed down for years, so we are identifying locations that can be used based on what they need some of these locations as mercy will be for those who are not infected so that they can basically be taken care of and that these beds that are needed for the ones who are infected can be available. So that kind of planning is going on here we are on lockdown. basically we are you know sheltering in home at home and a lot of people are working at trying to be in compliance and do what is necessary to avoid spreading infections. etcetera. So we're working hard here. It's just it's it's it's a problem that we have basically because we started late in the United States of America and as you know, yeah, we had an awesome pandemic. Affairs basically in the office of the President that was shutdown closed down not funded by the President of the United States. That's the kind of office that does the planning that anticipates that make sure that supplies and everything that's needed can be readily available when you have this kind of disaster and so even though we didn't have that kind of planning in addition to that they're early notifications untold were ignored, but we're working hard and and people are working hard to comply. Absolutely, yeah, we are digging out of a deficit. A Trump may deficit for sure, let me talk about the relief bill because one of the other responses that the Congress has stepped forward and Democrats really took control of this bill to make sure that it was not just a giveaway to the Super rich and to big corporations, but that there was a lot in it. You tweeted the following about the two trillion- dollar relief Bill. The two trillion dollars pass today doesn't have all the housing and consumer relief that was in my FSC Dems Financial Services But it was important for Congress to act now because so many people are struggling help is on the way and there's more to come. We won't stop until we help all Americans through this crisis. Speaker Pelosi has talked about it being a step-by-step process build one bill, two bills three and that there's more to come legislatively. Can you talk about what you think the next steps will be and should be because as you mentioned a lot of people who are lower income still need more relief than was in even this massive bill. Absolutely and I led the fight to get direct payments to all of our people. I started out as you know with 2000 for adults, 500 per trial and what happened was in the Senate. they kinda loved on to what we were doing, but they wanted to change it somewhat and they put 1200 for each of those and 500 for each child. I believe, but we gotta do more of that. but in addition to that, the plan that I put out would have given more protection to consumers, We have people who. Every day who have minimum wages when they get laid off when they get back, they don't have any cushion. They have nowhere to turn and they need to not only put food on the table. They need to put gasoline in the car. they have debts and so what I did in my plan was I made sure that number one we took care of all renters. This plan only takes care of renters that are government assisted, but we have people who are living in units that are owned by landlords. they maybe units of six 1218 units. These landlords have a mortgage to pay and so they need to be. We don't want them to evict anybody, but we have to create a facility which we pay the landlords who do not event that's extraordinarily important. It has to be in the next plan to make sure that we cover those who have needs a rent assistance. in addition to that I have in my plan that the credit bureaus cannot basically diminish your credit ratings and so that's not in this plan. Also I have in my plan and basically paying the bill. Credit cards or other kinds of things that low income people have debt that needs to be paid, but we're gonna be looking at all of that. We're gonna be looking more at our small businesses that this plan is very good for small businesses, but we gotta do more. We have our concession airs for example at the airport many minorities, but they are really harm now, but the airport has been closed out. We have people who provide the catering service for them. I have a woman who called me and she's pretty desperate. I'm gonna do everything that I. To look out for these small businesses, we still have people who are in their homes hungry. We had one woman who called couldn't take her medicine because she had no food in her home and so we just took her some food and say here's some food. We're gonna get with the LA Food blank but tomorrow Bank but tomorrow we're gonna get more food to you. But today there's enough food for you for a couple of days. Take your medicine. Don't be sick so everybody's working. I'm gonna put into the next bill. Much of what was not. Covered in this bill and I know that the President has got away with a lot of lying about what is going to happen with the defense of act, and he said that he was going to first of all in vote he did not he waited until he was on him and then he lied on some of the big businesses that he said he had an agreement with that. He really didn't have so the defense Production Act is extraordinarily important to put in place by the. Preparations that can give us the supplies that we need and I wanna shout out to the nurses and the doctors and the orderlies and the LBC and all of them were putting their lives on the line. We appreciate you. We thank you be safe and secure as you possibly can, but we honor you for the work that you're doing. I went back to Washington to vote because if they could go every day and service those who are sick and put themselves at risk, I had to go and take that vote. If we had to luckily we had a voice vote and. Able to get out I got back on the plane and got right now. Oh so that we can do our work here indeed, Congresswoman Maxine Waters. It's always great to talk with you. when I know the audience here we had a little bit of sound problems, but thank you so much for your time and I'd be safe and thank you very much. I really appreciate you and same for you and thank you for keeping the drum beat going. I appreciate you so much. Thank you.
